My daughter-in-law Anya, came to me the other day and asked me to watch the Netflix documentary, “What the Health”, she said that it is super popular right now and a lot of her friends have changed their diets after watching it. Now, they are  wondered why she and her family still eat meat and dairy products, because, “WHAT The HEALTH” clearly shows how bad meat and dairy products are”. Anya asked me to give some kind of rebuttal, because frankly, she didn’t know what to say to all of her friends who had seen the movie, and because she knows that we have always eaten a lot of meat, dairy and eggs and our family is very healthy.

According to WHAT THE HEALTH creators, Kip Anderson and Leonardo DiCaprio…

“What The Health is a groundbreaking documentary. The film follows intrepid filmmaker Kip Andersen as he uncovers the secret to preventing and even reversing chronic diseases. What the Health exposes the collusion and corruption in government and big business that is costing us trillions of healthcare dollars, and keeping us sick.”

The movie is backed by actor Leonardo DiCaprio and is getting a fantastic reception here in the U.S. and changing the way America eats.

The basic message of the movie, WHAT The HEALTH.

  • We have a lot of disease in the U.S.; Cancer, diabetes, heart disease etc.
  • Processed foods are contributing to the problem.
  • Sugar and high carbohydrate diets are not the problem.
  • Meat and Dairy products are the biggest reason for disease.
  • The meat and dairy industry is destroying the planet.
  • Becoming a Vegan is the solution.

When we first got interested in eating healthy we were pulled to and fro by all the “expert voices”.

We heartily agree with the first two messages in the documentary but disagree with the last four. When we first got interested in eating healthy we were pulled to and fro by all the “expert voices”. The Bible calls it “winds of doctrine” they blow every which way. We even tried being vegetarians for a while, but we found that all the voices were not singing in harmony. They actually contradicted each other on a daily basis. So who were we going to believe? We finally decided to let God be the judge as to what is healthy and what is not, what we should eat and what we shouldn’t. That is when I quit getting sick and when we quit needing doctors and medicine altogether. My wife Shary says that her friends often ask her what medications she takes. Here answer is “none”, we don’t want or need them.

WHAT The HEALTH suggests we not eat…

  • Any type of meat, (beef, poultry, fish, etc).
  • Dairy products of any kind, (Milk, butter, cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, etc). This includes goats milk and they even suggested that human milk was dangerous to babies.
  • Any type or form of Eggs.

What does the Bible say?

The authors of “WHAT THE HEATH”, believe that eating animal products is not only unhealthy but immoral. Obviously, God does not agree, since none of the great men and women in the Bible were vegans. Able ate meat but Cain did not.  Moses ate meat, Samuel ate meat. David ate meat, all of the priests ate meat. Most of them lived to be more than 100 years old. Jesus and the disciples ate meat. Abraham ate meat and dairy and offered meat and dairy products to God and his angels before they destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. And… wait for it… they ate meat and dairy products!

      Now the LORD appeared to him (Abraham) by the oaks of Mamre, while he was sitting at the tent door in the heat of the day. When he lifted up his eyes and looked, behold, three men were standing opposite him; and when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth, and said, “My Lord, if now I have found favor in Your sight, please do not pass Your servant by. “Please let a little water be brought and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree; and I will bring a piece of bread, that you may refresh yourselves; after that you may go on, since you have visited your servant.” And they said, “So do, as you have said.” So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah, and said, “Quickly, prepare three measures of fine flour, knead it and make bread cakes.” Abraham also ran to the herd, and took a tender and choice calf and gave it to the servant, and he hurried to prepare it. He took curds and milk and the calf which he had prepared, and placed it before them; and he was standing by them under the tree as they ate.

If WHAT The HEALTH teaches was true, our family would look more like this.

WHAT The HEALTH tries to make the case that beef, chicken, turkey, fish, milk, cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese and eggs are very bad for us and the reason people are getting diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Our family has been consuming these foods as the foundation of our diets for over 40 years. About 40 years ago we began to eliminate highly processed foods, especially sugar. Then we started eating more Biblical; (Red meat, milk, butter, cheese, eggs and poultry, the result is that none of us have diabetes or heart disease.

When all of our kids lived at home.

When all the kids lived at home, our family consumed 6 gallons of milk a day and ate innumerable eggs. We never paid for health insurance and never needed it. Most of our children never saw a doctor while living with us and following Biblical dietary habits. Shary gave birth to 13 healthy babies. We then raised those babies to be very healthy children and adults. So far those 13 children have raised 48 very healthy grandchildren.

In Conclusion

The Bible does encourage fasting for limited periods of time. We believe there are spiritual and physical benefits to fasting. Eating a vegan diet can produce beneficial results if done for a short time, but making this a permanent lifestyle change will shorten your life. In our research we have never found a lifelong vegan or vegetarian, that made it to the 100 year mark. Conversely, all of the super-centenarians and oldest living persons, ate meat, eggs and drank milk and lots of it.

Well I did it, I entered the Oregon Senior Games!

I decided to see if following God’s principles for health really makes a difference in strength and longevity. When I go to the store I see all these people my age hobbling to and from their cars. They look like every step hurts. Maybe it’s their feet, or knees maybe it is their hips and back. I feeI sorry for them, I really think that if they knew what I know they could feel young again. I feel great, like I did In high school. But the question; is that really unusual?

Maybe there are a lot of people my age that feel this good.

So I decided to see if following God’s advice has made me unusually healthy. I decided to compete in the 2017 Oregon  Senior games, to see how I compared with some of the fittest seniors in Oregon. The track meet was held in Bend Oregon, which was enough to get my wife on board, she loves the weather there.  I competed in three events, the fifty meter dash, the 100 meter dash and the shot put. The only thing I actually practiced at was the shot put. I practiced four times! I hadn’t sprinted for anything in over a year; hey when you are 65 there just aren’t that many reasons to sprint.

When I got to the Senior Games!

When I got to the Senior Games, I found out that most of the people who were competing actually worked out, training for their events and they had personal trainers to boot. They also had track shoes and used starting blocks. I hoped they didn’t notice my 10 year old tennis shoes I had used while painting my house. The other guys had track shorts and shirts. Are they really that much lighter than regular shorts? I thought I look my best in a cotton “Jesus is” T-shirt I got for free at church.

Right before a race, noticed I was one of the only sprinters without sun glasses. I don’t even own a pair of sun glasses, and how does that make you faster?  The guys in the shot put were dressed more like me but the two guys who beat me (by a foot) were over three hundred pounds and had arms  as big as my legs. Obviously, I have a lot to learn about senior track and field sports.

Most of the contestants used to be really exceptional athletes.

Most of the contestants at the senior games, were old people who used to be great athletes. One guy I talked to had been a professional soccer player. Most of the contestants looked like they were falling apart. A 64 year old, who the other guys said was super-fast, his name was Steve, told me he had four braces on to hold himself together. He had an ankle brace, a back brace and two knee braces. Steve said the reason he didn’t have five braces was because the rules only allow four.

Steve asked me if I was fast and hoped I wasn’t in his bracket, because he thought I looked fast. I told him I never was fast; in college the lineman on the football team could beat me in the fifty-yard dash. I told him my only hope of winning was that all the fast guys my age had fallen apart by now.

My only hope, was that all the fast guys had fallen apart by now!

Of all the participants I saw at the Senior Games, there were two other men that were physical standouts. That is, they looked healthy. One guy Stephan was 69 and didn’t look a day over 50. He wasn’t taped together, he shared with me that he was a Christian who believed in following God’s principals. Stephan took vitamins and minerals and exercised regularly.  He told me he was born with a disease that should have taken his life at an early age, but his parents got him to exercise and eat good food. He said that was his only explanation for why he looked so young.

So back to my performance!

I entered three events and got two silvers medals in the sprints and a bronze in the shot put. The best part was that I had a great time interviewing the other contestants. It was probably the best education I have received in a long time.

The other guy who looked healthy and had no braces was a retired Chiropractor named Russ Colgan. Russ beat everyone in every race he entered. The most impressive race he ran was the 200 meters. He didn’t just beat the other contestants in his age group, 75-80, he crushed them.

Russ not only beat the guys his age but he beat the 50 year old studs by a good 5 meters. That event is a killer, you have to sprint the entire way and your body never gets it’s second wind. Consequently, you are running on only the oxygen stored in your muscles. Russ killed all the other competitors.

What is Senior Games phenom, Russ’s secret?

I sat down with Russ after the meet was over and got to have a good interview. He made reference to the Bible and his eating habits, but he also said that he believed his unusual success came from putting into practice the theories of Otto Warburg.

So who was Otto Warburg?

Otto Warburg was born in 1883 to a Jewish father and a protestant mother. His father eventually accepted Jesus and became a  Christian. Otto’s family and Albert Einstein’s family were close friends. Otto and Albert became life long friends. He joined the military and was awarded the iron cross but his friend Albert successfully persuaded  him to leave the military and get back to his profession as a doctor.

Einstein felt that Otto’s real gift to mankind was to do medical research. He turned out to be right, Otto was nominated for the Nobel prize in medicine, 47 times, and finally received the award for his work with cancer treatments.

Otto boiled his theory down to one statement,

“the prime cause of cancer is the replacement of the respiration of oxygen in normal body cells by a fermentation of sugar. “[7]

According to the Phenom senior athlete, Russ Colgan, changing your body Ph and getting more oxygen into your cells isn’t just for cancer. According to Russ it is the most important factor in aging, immune systems and healthfulness. He said that there are medical clinics that can test you for these factors and it only costs about 20 dollars. He also highly recommend getting an Ionizer machine, which changes the ph of water to more alkaline state.

So what foods lower your oxygen levels and get your pH level below 7?

Note!

Our philosophy is that God knows best what we should eat and not eat. Our bodies are so complicated that interactions of different foods can make changes that we are unaware of. So, we will try things that seem to be working for people but if what they are advocating is at odds with the scriptures we will default back to what God said. Consequently we have not put the foods God has recommended in the foods to avoid category, even if they are considered to be acidic. Red meat is one of those foods. It is interesting to note that many of the foods in the acidic category are foods God has forbidden us to eat.

In the fight over what to feed our kids at school, who’s science are you going to believe, Obama’s or Trump’s?

Some science says we need less salt and saturated fats and other science say we need more, who is right?

LEESBURG, Va., May 1, 2017 – New USDA science is putting a hold on regulations in the National School Lunch Program that was scheduled to require less and less salt, and not allow whole milk in school cafeterias.

In making the announcement, at Catoctin Elementary School in Leesburg, Virginia,

The “Healthy, Hunger-Free Food Act of 2010”, the Obama administration enacted nutrition standards for more than 97,000 public school cafeterias that serve nearly 30,000,000 students. They began to replace whole milk with skim milk, they also required less and less salt in the student’s lunches.

What was the result of Michelle Obama’s lowered salt and fat intake?

Schools began to complain that the students were not eating the lunches but instead throwing them away. Schools are now asking lawmakers for a waiver that allows them to add more salt to the food. Michelle Obama fired back in a May New York Times Op ed piece, “Lawmakers are trying to lower the standards” [2] The Agriculture Secretary appointed by president Trump, Sonny Perdue, said the USDA will lift restrictions to allow schools to serve milk with increased fat, rather than the non-fat milk that was required under the Obama law.

Perdue stressed that he was not rolling back any provisions of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act (HHFKA) that was enacted in 2010. “We’re not winding back any nutritional standards at all,” he said. “We’re giving these … food-service professionals the flexibility to move as we get a healthier generation,”[1]

Who are you going to believe, when it comes to  the health of your children?

Once again well-meaning people like Michelle Obama have listened to non-Christian scientists, and put our children in danger. Let me explain why there is a huge difference between Christian scientists and non-Christian scientists.

Millions of people die each year because they lack Biblical knowledge. Knowledge about the care and feeding of their physical bodies!

Hosea 4:6  “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being My priest Since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.”

The idea, that to be a Christian is to be unscientific, or opposed to scientific knowledge, is not only incorrect, but is just the opposite of the truth. It would be like saying that Martin Luther King was a racist. Or that Einstein was opposed to math and physics.

The Word of God is not in opposition to the world of God.

Jesus, the creator,  is referred to as, “the Word”. In John chapter one, the Bible states that all wisdom and knowledge are found in Jesus Christ.

Colossians 2:3 “in him (Christ) are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

To love and know Jesus is to love knowledge, because he is the author of it.

Why is this important to health and wellness?

Because millions of people believe that the God of the Bible is mostly concerned with our souls and is not really that concerned about our physical bodies. Millions do not believe that the bible has any valuable information concerning the care and feeding of their bodies. Many people also believe there is no difference between God fearing scientist and those who reject the idea of a creator and ultimate judge of mankind.

So, is there any Biblical justification for the study of science and specifically health and wellness?

 Revelation 1:5b-6a                                                                                                                                                                                    To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kings and priests”

When we are born again, (John chapter 3) we become children of God and Kings. God has given us a glorious job of searching out mysteries, looking at his creation to discover it’s secrets.

  1. Christians and Jews believe God created laws; moral laws, health laws and laws of science.
  2. We believe that those laws do not change, but are constant.
  3. We believe that God meant for us to study those laws and use them for the benefit of mankind.

Christians believe that God created a universe with laws. These laws cannot be broken without consequences. The only exception, is in very rare cases, where God chooses to suspend his own laws for a specific purpose; we call that a miracle. For thousands of years, other religious groups have held to the belief that there are no laws that govern the universe. They believe that the physical universe is unpredictable. They believe that the universe is constantly changing. Therefore, in the past they did not pursue science like the Christian-Judeo cultures. They believed it would be useless since everything could change tomorrow.

Consequently, most scientific studies started with Jews or Christians.

Almost all the laws of science and physics were discovered by Christians. Most of the laws of genetics, health and wellness were discovered by Christians.

The elephant in the room?

The problem we now have, is that our schools believe they can educate scientists without any reference to God or a higher power. They believe that this will produce better science, when in fact, it has produced just the opposite. People who believe in a creator, a final judge of mankind, are less likely to lie for temporary personal gain. People who believe in situational ethics and no God, have proved to be far more likely to cheat in order to further their careers.

This Godless education system has brought about an epidemic of false or fake science. Scientists will lie about their findings in order to get recognition, fame or fortune. A classic case was the two physicists who said they had produced cold fusion in a quart jar. [3]

Recently in the news was the shocking revelation that the nutritionist, Ancel Keys, lied. He is  the nutritionist that convinced a generation of Americans, and the world, to eat margarine instead of butter, to drink skim milk instead of whole milk and to avoid all saturated fats. It is his research that has led the Obama’s to push for less saturated fat in school cafeterias.

Here are the scary facts!!!

Harvard Medical School did a twenty-year study to determine if Ancel Keys was right. The study was entitled “The Harvard Nurse’s Health Study” and was published in January 1993. It was conducted with 90,000 nurses, half used butter and the other half used margarine. After 20 years, it was discovered that the nurses using margarine had 75% more heart attacks than the nurses who used butter. The nurses using margarine also had a higher rate of cancer and Alzheimer’s. [5]

Since 1993, scientists, nutritionists and doctors have known that restricting saturated fats in butter and whole milk is dangerous, but they continue to promote this idea today.

God says that people have rejected knowledge and have forgotten the law of God. He also said it is causing them to parish. The Word of God and the law of God say that butter, whole milk, salt, and red meat are good. True science is in agreement with God’s word.

Some of the greatest scientific minds that ever lived, were children of God.

To name a few, Solomon, Louis IV of France, Isaac Newton, Raymond Vahan Damadian, and Joel Wallach. These men all loved God, were guided by the scriptures and investigated the nature of things.

King Solomon was given wisdom from God to understand nature and use that understanding for the good of mankind.

King Louis the IV

King Louis the IV of France was noted for studying the scriptures. He became a shining light in the area of law and politics. He invented many legal terms we take for granted today. He was the first to say that all men should be equal under the law. He invented the phase “innocent until proven guilty”. He was the first to give people the right to appeal to another judge, when they felt they had not gotten a fair trial under their first judge.

Sir Isaac Newton

Sir Isaac Newton has been widely lauded as the most important scientist in history. Even Albert Einstein said that Isaac Newton was the smartest person that ever lived. [1][2] Newton discovered laws of physics, astronomy and drastically improved the field of mathematics. Newton said that he spent far more time studying the Bible than science.  Isaac Newton was so smart and so advanced in mathematics, that many college students jokingly resent his discovery of calculus.

Raymond Vahan Damadian

Raymond Vahan Damadian is the man who invented the MRI, one of the most important scientific discoveries of our century. He is a devoted Christian who believes the Bible, including the Biblical/Scientific teachings about a young earth. He tells stories about scientists and doctors who were mad at him for discovering the MRI. They were mad because it was going to hurt them financially. One doctor angrily asked, “if people use your MRI and are diagnosed early enough to avoid chemotherapy, how will I pay for my kids college”? That story tells it all, we need Godly men who are more concerned about pleasing God and trust him to provide for their needs and the needs of their families.

Dr. Joel Wallach

Dr. Joel Wallach has been twice nominated for the Nobel prize in medicine. At the age of 9 he felt God had given him a destiny that would help millions of people.  He has discovered, through extensive research, that most diseases are caused by vitamin and mineral deficiencies. He has also cataloged most diseases and what vitamin and minerals are necessary to reverse their effects. Dr. Wallach has produced countless books, tapes, videos and peer reviewed medical papers. [3] We have been listening to and reading Dr. Wallach for almost 40 years; I cannot remember him ever stating anything that contradicts the Bible. Almost all other nutritionist that we have read or listened to will consistently make statements about health and wellness that are in direct opposition to Bible teachings, i.e. (red meat is bad, milk is bad, salt is bad)

In conclusion

Our schools need to return to Biblical training and Biblical/scientific eating. We need to promote and encourage God fearing doctors and scientists who are more concerned about pleasing God and helping people than they are about furthering their careers. The greatest minds that ever lived were guided by God and by his word. That is why we bring this information to you each week. 9 shocking reasons we should be fasting.

Fasting, what is it?

Fasting is simply the act of abstain from all or some kinds of food or drink for a specified period of time. Some fasting works and some doesn’t.

People have many different reasons for fasting.

  1. For health reasons.
  2. For weight loss and beauty.
  3. Some people fast as a means of letting God know they are serious and want him to move on their behalf. Often people will say, “I will fast till my friend gets healed”. Or, “I will fast so God will fix my marriage”. Jesus said that when we fast in secret God will reward us openly.

16 “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you openly.

Jesus said that fasting that is done for people to see doesn’t move the hand of God. It does get people to think we are spiritual but Jesus said that was the only reward for that kind of fasting.

If you fast, will you always get what you want?

Sometimes when people fast and pray they get the things they are requesting. In the book of Ester, the people fasted and prayed so that the government would not implement a law that required mass genocide on the Jewish people. God answered their prayers through a marvelous set of perfectly timed events. The book of Ester is a great read and a great example of getting what you fasted for.

Even when people fast in secret they don’t always get what they are asking for. Sometimes people get what they are fasting for, and sometimes they don’t. I have had many friends fast and pray in earnest, but they did not get what they were praying for. When this happens, it can be very discouraging. Because of this, people often give up on the practice of fasting all together. Does this mean that Jesus lied about God rewarding us? Does it mean my friends somehow did it wrong? Let me tell you a story that might shed some light on this issue.

Did Jesus lie about fasting or are we just doing it wrong?

When I was a youth pastor, we got a video once a month from a group called Fire By Night. They would introduce the kids to new Christian music artists and do hilarious skits in order to illustrate Biblical truths. The videos were great and the kids loved them. One year they advertised summer mission trips. They showed kids ministering on mission trips all over the world. They even showed famous Christian Artist with the kids on trips. Well, our kids were sold, they all wanted to be missionaries.

Unfortunately, that year, my wife Shary was due to give birth during the mission trip. The kids still wanted to go even though I couldn’t make it.  A couple that helped with the youth group, Dan and Brenda Lewis offered to go as chaperones while I stayed home. They ended up taking a trip deep into Mexico.

When they got back from the trip, they all gathered in my dinning room and shared their experiences. Along with their parents and family members we all listened as the related one miraculous story after another. The stories were great and it seems like we listened for hours as they shared how people got back their sight, lame people walking and demons were cast out.

One story they told us was about a man who had one leg about 3 inches shorter than the other. As they were praying for him with their eyes closed, the interpreter began to shout and scream. They said they were afraid to open their eyes at first, they didn’t know what they would see. Finally, they looked and saw that his leg had grown so that both legs were the same length.

The next year I got to go; wild horses couldn’t have stopped me. I was so determined to see the same things the kids saw the year before, that I suggested we fast for the 28-hour trip from Astoria to El Paso Texas. My idea was that we would fast and pray, so God would do miracles. Kind of like we were letting God know we were serious. Much to my disappointment, not one person got healed, and we didn’t see any miracles on that mission trip. But, what we did see and what did happen, was we prayed with over 3,000 people to receive Jesus. At one open air preaching event, people lined up three deep wanting to receive Jesus.

Something better!

At first, I was disappointed that we did not get to see any miracles. But when I realized how many people came to Christ I understood that God had kept his promise. “He rewarded us”, not with miracles but with something better, souls. Jesus did not lie to us and most people are not doing it wrong. Jesus never promise we would get what we fasted for, he promised we would be openly rewarded, and that’s just what God does.

 

How I apply that to my life.

Over forty years of fasting has taught me that Jesus meant it when he said, “God will reward you openly”. That promise has motivated me to do a lot of fasting and God has rewarded me in a lot of very fun and amazing ways.

Here is how I have applied that to my life.  I fast once a week by not eating solid food for breakfast and lunch every Sunday. Once a year I go on a personal retreat with God, on that retreat I will go without food or water for three days.  Before mission trips I usually fast anywhere from three days to three weeks. I have done a couple of 40 day fasts where I drank juice and water.

All the fasting I do with the except of the three-day fast, I take vitamins and minerals and drink milk, water or juice. As I have gotten older I sometimes I refrain from solid foods but do eat soup.  All that to say this.  Many people think fasting is dangerous. Fasting is not dangerous, on the contrary, it can be quite healthful and; I have always found God to be faithful to reward me, one way or another.

Some spiritual benefits of fasting.

  1. I have been doing mission trips for all these years and people always get saved and usually we do get to see God heal people and sometimes we see him drive out demons.
  2. It’s been my privilege to leading a great church and school for over 25 years.
  3. I have been fortunate to see all my children do mission work in foreign countries.
  4. My wife Shary and I have been together for over 45 years and She is my best friend.

Is all of this because I fast from time to time? Maybe not, but on the other hand maybe it is. Somebody is going to fast and pray, might as well be us. Somebody is going to get a reward from God, might as well be us!

Physical benefits to fasting.

Not all the benefits from fasting are spiritual. Evidently there are a lot of physical benefits as well. Here are 9 scientifically verified benefits of fasting.

  1. Intermittent fasting changes the function of cells, organs, genes and hormones!

Evidently our internal organs need a rest occasionally so they can repair and recuperate.

  • Insulin levels:Blood levels of insulin drop significantly, which facilitates fat burning .
  • Human growth hormone HGH:The blood levels of growth hormone may increase as much as 5-fold. Higher levels of this hormone facilitate fat burning and muscle gain, and have numerous other benefits
  • Cellular repair:The body induces important cellular repair processes, such as removing waste material from cells when fasting .
  • Gene expression:While fasting there are beneficial changes in several genes and molecules related to longevity and protection against disease. Fasting strengthens your immune system.
  • The liver, kidneys, stomach, intestines and other organs need to rest regularly. During intermittent fasting these organs heal and recuperate.

Intermittent fasting enhances hormone function to facilitate weight loss. Fasting once in a while for long periods to loose weight doesn’t work over the long                    haul. When we go for long periods without eating, your body reprogram itself to hold onto fat.                   Even though you might loose a lot of weight while fasting, you will gain in all back quickly.

Regular: once a week or twice a week fasting is effective because it lowers insulin levels, while increasing growth hormone levels and increasing amounts of                     norepinephrine (noradrenaline) all increase the breakdown of body fat and facilitate its use for energy.

How do I get started?

Start off with a short easy fast once a week. Pick a day to skip breakfast and lunch, just drink juice or water for those two meals. Take a vitamin and mineral supplement with your liquids, then eat a normal dinner. When you can do this without headaches or other withdrawal symptoms you could try two days or maybe all day.

 

What to expect!

It is common for people to get a headache or some other unpleasant feeling the first time they try to fast. Don’t panic, you are not the first person to experience this. it is simply your body having a temper tantrum. Your body has been used to being in charge and it wants to stay that way.

Fasting is your spirit beginning to be in the driver’s seat. Pray for God’s help, then tell your flesh that you are now in charge, the negative physical feelings will eventually go away. I never have any negative reactions to fasting because my body is used to it. Most people quickly get over the withdraws associated with first time fasting. Often people who have trained their bodies to fast feel better, more alert and alive while fasting. The apostle Paul tells us that we need to be in control of our body, not the other way around.

Galatians 5:16

16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you cannot do what you want to do.

 

There are so many positive benefits to fasting, what are you waiting for? The Pharisees asked Jesus why his disciples didn’t fast like they did. First of all, Jesus wasn’t impressed with the kind of fasting they practiced, but he told them that when he was gone from this earth his disciple would fast.

Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.

In Matthew 6:16-18  Jesus didn’t say, “if you fast” he said, “when you fast”. Jesus expects us to fast, why? Because it is good for us. Make plans today, it will change your life.

         Vitamin C; The Granddaddy Of All Vitamins!

Genetics or vitamins, what will determine how long and well you live? Just this week a reporter for ABC news announced that our genes are truly the driving force for how long we will live. The news agency was promoting the idea that you really have no control over how long or well you live, it is all in your genetic makeup. So why bother to eat right and take supplements like vitamin C, if your genetic time clock will stop at its predetermined time anyway? The scientific evidence is abundant and the bible is clear on this issue. Your genes are not the driving force that determines your longevity. First, I am going to share two, out of hundreds of Bible verses, that declare God’s opinion about our ability to lengthen and improve our lives through our life-choices. Then I will give you the scientific evidence that confirms God’s word.

  • Ephesians 6:1-3 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise),“that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”
  • Deuteronomy 11:18,19a Observe therefore all the commands I am giving you today, so that you may have the strength to go in and take over the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, and so that you may live long”

The bible does not say that your genes determine your longevity. The bible says your actions determine your strength and longevity. And if that ABC reporter wanted to be honest, the article in Scientific American he was referring to, did also give credit to lifestyle changes for promoting long life.4 True science is not in contradiction to God’s word, it actually confirms the Word of God. The study of epigenetics is another proof of this.

Scientific American has numerous articles on the new science of Epigenetics. Epigenetics is the discovery that lifestyle can change your genes. That is, your genetics are not static they can be altered. We will discuss more about epigenetics in a later article, stay tuned.

            Linus Pauling, Author of “How to live longer and feel better”

Linus Pauling the only person to ever win two undivided Nobel Prizes.1 Pauling has been listed among the “20 greatest scientists of all time.”[6][7]  Francis Crick acknowledged Pauling as the “father of molecular biology“.[8][9]

Linus Pauling is a great case against the idea that your genes determine your longevity. Pauling’s mother only lived to the age of 45, and his father died at the age of 34; not exactly the best genetic heritage that you could ask for. Despite his poor genetic makeup, Pauling lived to the ripe old age of 93 and was very productive in his later years. He attributes his longevity and strength to vitamin C and other supplements.

Linus Pauling, over his lifetime, tried many times to get the Mayo Clinic to repeat his studies his Studies showing vitamin C’s effect on Cancer, but they refused, or altered his techniques and in the end denied that his research in vitamins and minerals was of any value. It seems odd that a man of his stature and renown was unable to get the mainstream medical community to repeat his studies to see for themselves if his theories were true. But, Pauling persisted, and the world has embraced vitamin C as a valuable supplement. Unfortunately, most people who do take vitamin C don’t have any idea what quantities are necessary to get the results that Pauling promised. So here is the unedited version of Pauling journey to greatness and his recommended quantity of vitamin C intake per day.

In 1941, at age 40, Pauling was diagnosed with Bright’s disease,  this disease is distinguished by, inflammation of serous membraneshemorrhagesapoplexyconvulsionsblindnesscoma and, if not treated properly, death. Following the recommendations of Thomas Addis, who actively recruited Ava Helen Pauling, Linus’s wife, as “nutritionist, cook, and eventually as deputy ‘doctor'”, Pauling was able to control the disease with diet changes and vitamin supplements.[134]  It was this instance that convinced Pauling that many deadly diseases could be controlled or eliminated with vitamin and mineral supplements.

In 1966 Pauling started taking 3 grams of vitamin C every day to prevent colds. It worked so well that Pauling published a scientific review of the practice.

In the 1970’s, Linus Pauling discovered that it was the white blood cells that need a high dose of vitamin C… to combat the common cold. He also discovered that vitamin C was needed by white blood cells so that they could phagocytize (ingest and destroy) viruses and bacteria.2 This was a major breakthrough in human wellness.

In 1996 a website was created expounding Pauling’s treatment of heart disease, which it referred to as Pauling Therapy. Pauling proved that heart disease can be treated and even cured using only Lysine and Vitamin C and without drugs or heart operations.[139]

In 1971 Pauling and Ewan Cameron, a cancer surgeon, wrote many technical papers and a popular book, Cancer and Vitamin C, that discussed their observations. Pauling made vitamin C popular with the public[141] and eventually published two studies of a group of 10terminal patients that proved vitamin C increased survival by as much as four times, compared to untreated patients.[142][143]  In that study they gave terminal cancer patients large-dose vitamin C supplements (10,000 mg. per day) they saw substantial relief in the 5th to 10th day of treatment. Their patient’s experience increased well-being, tumors were retarded or stopped. Particularly distressing pain from tumor pressure stopped and there was a relief from respiratory distress,3

Another landmark study was done by Dr. Abram Hoffer. Hoffer is a specialist in psychiatry, and in his Canadian practice (in Victoria, British Columbia). More than a decade ago he began to register cancer patients who had been sent to him because of emotional distress, usually, severe depression or anxiety. Dr. Hoffer put them on a regimen involving an average of 12,000 mg. per day  of vitamin C and large amounts of vitamin E, vitamin B3, other B vitamins, beta-carotene, and some minerals. Initially, this was done to improve their mental state, but other benefits quickly became evident.

In a report published in the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine in 1990, Dr. Hoffer and Dr. Cameron, tracked 134 patients with advanced cancer who had come under Dr. Hoffer’s care. The report noted that 33 patients, refused the vitamins and minerals Dr. Hoffer recommended; those patients averaged only a few months of life after beginning therapy. The 101 patients with advanced cancer who followed the vitamin regimen prescribed by Dr. Hoffer, on average, lived 16 times longer than those who did not. Many of the 101 patients were still alive when the study was concluded, so the results may have been even greater.

So, if you don’t have cancer, do you still need vitamin C? Yes, vitamin C is the granddaddy of all vitamins and yields many many great benefits. Here are some other common ailments that vitamin C can cure.

Among other things, allergies, loose teeth and receding gums are a problem of insufficient vitamin C intake. In 2001 my wife’s allergies got really bad, she happened on to some information that suggested vitamin C was a natural antihistamine. Shary started taking about 5,000 mg. of vitamin C, she has never taken allergy medicine since she substituted it with vitamin C. More recently Shary had muscle, joint and tooth pain, she was also experiencing loose teeth and receding gums. Nothing she tried seemed to work until she started taking 10,000 mg of vitamin C. After the first night her teeth quit hurting and her joints started feeling better, she said it was the first time in months that she woke up without pain.

Vitamin C helps your immune system fight off all diseases. Most of us are not taking enough vitamin C to do any good. The governments recommended daily allowance of only 60 mg/ day, will barely keep you from having scurvy. Linus Pauling who made vitamin C a household word, recommended we take 3,000 to 10,000 mg/ day.

Here are some foods that are rich in vitamin C.

  • Yellow bell peppers 569% of the RDA per pepper.
  • Red bell peppers, 349% of the RDA per pepper.
  • Green bell peppers, 220% of the RDA per pepper.
  • Oranges, 116% of the RDA per orange.
  • Broccoli has 149% of the RDA
  • KIWI fruit has 151%
  • Watermelon has 112% per cup.

Note: natural sources tend to be more digestible, thus, more usable to your body. Vitamin C is water soluble so it does not store up in the body and must be eaten every day. If you take too much vitamin C you will get the opposite of constipation (The other way of saying this seems so disagreeable) 🙂 Some people find this an added benefit.

 God says  it is what you do that determines how well and how long you will live, not your genetic make-up or your parental heritage.

What’s My Attitude Got To Do With It?

Jeanne Calment of Paris France was inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records on October 16, 1995 as the oldest documented human ever. There are many who have claimed to live longer but none have the paperwork to prove it. At the time she was 120 years young. Jeanne remembers watching the Eiffel Tower being constructed; she outlived twenty-seven French presidents, and remembers selling pencils to the famous artist Vincent Van Gogh. At the age of 100, Jeanne was still riding her bike. Jeanne lived to be 122 years 164 days. When asked, “What’s the secret to your long life?” she answered “Laughter!”

It is not just what you eat that determines how healthy you are. It is not how much exercise you get or even how spiritual you are, that will determine how healthy and how long you will live. It is everything the bible says about health and wellness, and one of the things that the Bible mentions often, that will affect your health and mine, is our attitude.

                  “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit                                                                                    dries up the bones.                                                         (Proverbs 17:22)

The King James Version of the Bible translates Proverbs 17:22 “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine Strong’s Hebrew dictionary defines the original word as “a cure,” so a more literal translation would be that “A merry heart is a cure.”

Norman Cousins, Editor of the Saturday Evening Post, found this to be profoundly true. Cousins was dying of cancer, he was told that there was nothing that modern medicine could do for him, his story is now famous. If he was going to die anyway, he decided to stop worrying and working, and spend his last days watching funny movies. As he watched and laughed, he discovered something amazing; ten minutes of laughter produced two hours of pain free sleep. The action he took eventually cured him of terminal cancer. 1

It is now known that laughter and a positive attitude cause your immune system to function better. The opposite is true. Depression, anger, hate, etc. will cause your immune system to shut down.

My wife and I have noted that many, not all, but many people who have cancer, were bitter first. A lot of them were quietly bitter, they put on a happy face but in their hearts they were dying. Often it was because they were in a bad relationship where they felt trapped and helpless. Some were outwardly bitter and it came out almost every time we would speak with them. Their intensity would begin to rise and we would feel a little uncomfortable as they went on and on about other people’s shortcomings or problems. If this sounds like you, one solution is to speak to your soul.

                 “Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me?                            Put your hope in God. For I will yet praise him my Savior and my God.          (Psalm 42:5)

Praise the Lord, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits– who forgives all your sins and                                                            heals all your diseases.                                                          (Psalms 103:1-3)

 King David spoke to his soul, he encouraged his own soul to hope, praise and not to forget all God’s benefits. As we do that the Bible says God will heal all our diseases. Yes, our attitude affects our health.

   “Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.” (Proverbs 16:24)

                                       The tongue has the power of life and death,                                                                               and those who love it will eat its fruit.                                    (Proverbs 18:21)

God is encouraging us to constantly remind our soul to remember all the good things He has done for us, then thank and praise Him. If we put our hope in God, and decide to fill our mind and soul with those thoughts, they will bring healing to our physical bodies. Philippians 4:6-8 sums it up…

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

 If we make an effort to think on good things and we pray and trust God for the rest, God promises to take care of our hearts, minds and bodies.

Ephesians 4:26-27 instructs us don’t let the sun go down on our anger.” Evidently going to bed angry will mess up our sleep, which can lower our body’s ability to fight disease. Also, from what we learned in the wellness gospel, article about rest, a lack of sleep can also make us stupid, not to mention give us ulcers. There is overwhelming evidence that anger can cause a number of illnesses and shorten our lives. The book None Of These Diseases2 does a wonderful job on this subject.”

                           “A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown,                                                                but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones.”                                        (Proverb 12:4)

The attitude of shame and resentment will cause the bones to decay. (Osteoporosis and Arthritis) That is why two people can have the same diet, the same exercise, even the same genes, yet one gets Arthritis and the other doesn’t. Shame and resentment predispose one of them to the crippling bone disease. What is the cure? Open honest communication with the offending person. (See Matthew 18:15) Then if that fails, you will need to have some open honest communication with your Heavenly Father who can heal all wounds and mend every broken heart.

                       “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”                          (Psalm 147:3)

There is a book out called A More Excellent Way; this book catalogs many diseases and the attitude sins that seem to go hand in hand with each particular disease. If you have a lingering disease and nothing is working to heal you of it, you should get this book; it just may hold the key to your healing.

Someone has said that our attitude will determine our altitude. The most effective way I have found to adjust my attitude is to spend more time with Jesus. More time praying, more time reading his word, more time praising and worshiping him at home and church. Isaiah the prophet spoke about him…

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised and we esteemed him not. Surely he took up our infirmities (diseases) and carried our sorrows. Yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions and he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way;                               and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.”                              (Isaiah 53)

If you are struggling with unforgiveness, bitterness or any other disease-producing attitude, Jesus understands and can help. He has experienced every hurt and disappointment that you have and conquered it. The apostle Paul wrote…

We do not have a high priest (Jesus) who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” (Hebrews 4:15-16)

The Bible teaches that man is a three part being: spirit, soul and body. We have a spirit and a soul that reside in our body. Our thoughts and attitudes affect our soul and our soul can affect our bodies for either good or bad.

If you want to live to be over one hundred healthy years like Jeanne Calment of France, you will have to laugh a lot. The Bible says that the fruit of the Holy Spirit is joy (Galatians 5:22). Ask God every day to fill you with his Spirit and with his joy and he will do it. And, you just might heal someone else with your joy.

Biblical concept:

 IF YOUR BODY IS SICK IT COULD BE THE RESULT OF A SICK SOUL!                             A CHEERFUL HEART COULD BE THE CURE.

To sum it up, here are 6 Biblical prescriptions for a healing attitude.

  1.  Laugh a lot, spend time with people who make you laugh. Watch funny movies and videos, stay away from horrors and dramas.
  2. Set aside time each day to praise God. Make a list of the good things god has given you.
  3. Ask God to forgive you and then thank him that he always does.
  4. Guard your tongue, speak pleasant words, avoid negative speech.
  5. Control your thought life, reject negotive, depressing, critical thoughts and nurture uplifting, encouraging thoughts.
  6. Ask God to fill you with his Holy Spirit every day.
