Vitamins and Minerals in the Bible?

Vitamins and Minerals. Twenty plus years ago, I was helping coach my son Peter’s high school soccer team. One day after practice, he challenged me to a foot race. He was the captain of the team, but I thought I could still keep up with him (oh, the foolishness of midlife). So we lined up with the other players and coaches watching; someone yelled go, and off we went, male egos and all. We were neck and neck about halfway down the field when it felt like a giant hand grabbed my ankle and threw me to the ground. As I struggled to stand up, I looked and there was a huge indentation in my left thigh. That pulled muscle created a hole that is still there to this day.

Pulled muscles had always been a problem for me, but the problem got much worse after I had a physically traumatic experience climbing Pikes Peak in Colorado. When we began the climb, we were told that we had to make the summit by a certain time because there was increased lightning danger after that. So with very little air, and quickly trying to climb from 6,000 ft. to the 14,000 ft. summit, I evidently pushed myself too far. I just remember the last hour or so, it took every big of will power to just put one foot in front of the other. I now realize that that event had depleted my already low mineral levels.  I just didn’t feel right for months. This is a common experience for people who have had any kind of trauma.  Joel Wallach says, “Exercise without supplementation is suicide” When I finally realized what I was suffering from, I took massive amounts of vitamins and minerals. About two weeks later the symptoms were gone.  I was my old self again; except for the pulled muscles.

If you have one or more of the following symptoms, you probably have a copper deficiency: chronic pulled muscles, gray hair, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, sagging skin, crow’s feet, to name a few. I had most of these, especially pulled muscles.  It got to the point that every time I went to play soccer, I would warm up and stretch for at least 15 minutes and within five minutes I had pulled a muscle.  Some of them were quite serious. It just about ended my participation in soccer, one of my favorite pastimes.

After listening to a lecture by Dr. Joel Wallach, I realized my problem was not old age, but a severe copper deficiency.  So I followed Dr. Wallach’s advice and began taking 2 mg of copper a day. In only a couple of weeks, I was able play soccer with only a minimum amount of warming up and stretching. The pulled muscles were gone!

Copper is the necessary nutrient for elasticity in our tissues, muscles, skin, arteries and veins.

Now for the most important information about copper; the most permanent symptom of copper deficiency is a ruptured aneurysm, which usually ends in death.  If your veins aren’t elastic, they, like your muscles, will break or rupture instead of stretching.  If you have any of the above mentioned symptoms, get some copper today.   It is cheap and the capsules are some of the smallest and easiest to take. They could literally save your life.

Otherwise healthy people who may only lack one or two vital vitamins or minerals die by the thousands each year; I could have been one of them. So, where in the Bible does it say we need to take vitamin or mineral supplements? It doesn’t but there are some instructions in the bible that could keep us from having so many vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

Leviticus 25:1-5 “The Lord said to Moses on Mount Sinai. Speak to the Israelites and say to them: When you enter the land I am going to give you, the land itself must observe a Sabbath to the Lord. For six years sow your fields, and for six years prune your vineyards and gather their crops. But in the seventh year the land is to have a Sabbath of rest, a Sabbath to the Lord. Do not sow your fields or prune your vineyards.  Do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the grapes of your untended vines.  The land is to have a year of rest.”

The U.S. Department of Agriculture stated as early as 1923, that our soils were completely depleted of minerals and that they must be supplemented. They also stated that it only takes 5-10 years to deplete the soil.3 God said let it rest every seven years, which gives the soil time to release its minerals and allows needed minerals to be available again to plants. By the way, some people assume that organically grown food is always better. Not if it is grown in depleted soil; plants cannot manufacture minerals that aren’t readily available in the soil. Plants can only absorb minerals that have leached out of the larger rocks and that takes time.

Christopher Byrd, a bestselling author, had the idea that all you need to do is eat organically grown food. He wrote “Secrets of the Soil” and “Secret Life of Plants.”4 He practiced what he preached and lived on organically grown food.  He did not supplement with any vitamins or minerals.  He believed that organically grown food was the answer to long life.  He died at the age of 68, seven years short of the average American couch potato. He had a ruptured aneurysm, and died of a simple copper deficiency.  Either letting the soil rest every seven years or supplementing his diet with a few pennies of copper per day and he might have lived to be 100.

According to Harvard Medical School, there are 14 essential vitamins and 16 essential minerals that you need to be conscious of for good health. Essential means that you cannot live without them in your diet. According to Dr. Joel Wallach there are 60 essential minerals, 16 essential vitamins, 12 essential amino acids and 3 essential fatty acids that have been identified so far.1 These nutrients are necessary for our bodies to function properly. The normal way for us to get the 60 essential minerals is for the plants we eat to extract them from the soil.  Also, the best way for the animals we eat to get those minerals is to get them from plants that live in soil rich with those minerals. To sum it up, if it’s not in the soil, or not in the soil in a form that is available to the plants, it won’t be in the plants and if it’s not in the plants, it won’t get into you!

So, what did the Agriculture Department recommended to farmers in order to solve the problem of soil depleted of available minerals. They suggested adding nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. These three nutrients will make the plants grow big and green.  But, if you have done your math lately, you will realize that three minerals are 57 minerals short of the 60 essential minerals that we need.  I believe that had we followed God’s advice of allowing the land to rest every seven years, we would still have mineral rich land. Just a thought! And for you Bible history buffs. The people who followed these instructions lived long healthy lives.  The Caleb. mentioned in the bible, was 85 and still strong enough to fight in hand to hand combat, with heavy swords.

“and now behold, I (Caleb) am eighty-five years old today.  “I am still as strong today as I was in the day Moses sent me; as my strength was then, so my strength is now, for war and for going out and coming in. Joshua 14:10b-11

What a stud, at 85 he was still as strong and healthy as he was when he was 40. He was also ready to prove it by physically taking on 20 to 40-year old’s who were in their prime.

Another interesting fact is that pre-flood mankind, according to the Bible, lived a lot longer than post flood mankind.  Some excavations of preserved pre-flood vegetation have produced amazing findings. Unlike our present vegetation, this pre-flood vegetation had all 60 essential minerals.5 This would suggest that the crust of pre-flood earth had an even mixture of minerals whereas post flood mineral deposits are not nearly so uniform. If pre-flood vegetation had all 60 essential minerals and in the proper ratios. Wow, you don’t suppose that might be one of the reasons that pre-flood men and women lived to be 800 plus years old.

My family lives in what is referred to as the goiter belt. It includes Oregon and Washington and extends across the top of the United States to the Great Lake region. This area has virtually no iodine in the soil. Doctors made the correlation between low iodine and goiters, so in response, our salt is almost all iodine enriched, (iodized salt).  Before Iodine was added to salt, people living here were plagued with goiters. Unfortunately, Goiters are not the only problem with low iodine consumption. My wife does not get goiters but she often has a hard time maintaining a comfortable body temperature. She will be too cold or too hot. Taking Iodine supplements gives her body back it’s natural ability to adjust to temperature changes. Are you often too hot or too cold? You might need more Iodine.

The main point I am making is that we need all 60 essential minerals to live comfortably and healthfully past 100 years of age.  If the soil has been depleted of minerals by overuse or the soil simply never had all 60 essential minerals, then you will either suffer or you will have to supplement your diet with minerals.

The healing power of forgiveness!

Unforgiveness can make you sick.

I will admit that the story I am about to tell you, about unforgiveness, will sound weird, but if you have ever been on a mission trip to a third world country, or know someone who has, they will tell you that these things do happen.

So here goes; on a mission trip to Baja Mexico, I had the most amazing experience, it is something I will never forget. We were having an outdoor church service at the south end of Ensenada Mexico, about forty feet from highway 1. We were praying for an older man, his son had brought him to the meeting because he had a cancerous tumor bulging from his stomach region, doctors had told him that he was dying. As we were praying for him I had a “holy hunch from God”, so I told him, through an interpreter, that his problem might be related to unforgiveness, and my hunch was that it was a close relative he was angry with. He immediately affirmed that this was true and that I must be referring to his brother who he hated. He explained to us that he and his brother, previously, had a successful business together. His brother had swindled the business away from him. His brother was now wealthy and he was very poor. I told him that I did not blame him for being upset with his brother, but that God requires us to forgive others, because he has forgiven us all our sins. I also said that this could be the reason his body was unable to fight off the cancer. I asked him if he was willing to forgive his brother and he said he was. The interpreter led him in a prayer of forgiveness, when he had finished the prayer we all noticed a most amazing thing; the bulge in his stomach had disappeared. When we asked him how he felt, he said he felt wonderful.

In Matthew 18:15-35 Jesus reveals his Father’s attitude toward unforgiveness and the consequences of not forgiving others. He explains that if we will not forgive our brother from the heart, our Heavenly Father will turn us over to the torturers (tormentors). Many people do not realize what physical destruction they unleash on themselves by withholding forgiveness from people who have hurt them.

Unforgiveness is like drinking poison every day                                         and hoping the other person dies.

As it relates to forgiving others, Jesus set an example for us. While he was hanging on the cross in agony and the Pharisees were hurling insults at him, he said, “forgive them for they don’t know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34) Jesus not only canceled a debt we could not afford to pay, he also paid our debt with his own life and blood.

Then the master called the servant in. “You wicked servant”, he said. “I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?” In anger his master turned him over to the jailer to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed. “This is how my Heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart.” Matthew 18:32-35

These tormentors are not playing games; they are playing for keeps. The Bible does not say who they are, but we can assume they are supernatural. I believe it is possible that they are the demonic spirits of Cancer, Depression, Rejection, and every other kind of sickness, both physical and mental. Jesus is called the great physician. The Devil and his fallen angels are believed by many, to be just the opposite.

So, how does the bible suggest we deal with people who have sinned against us, who have hurt and wounded us in terrible ways? According to Matthew 18 the first step in forgiveness, if possible, is to confront the person who has sinned against us. As hard as this may be, we are commanded to talk to them alone, without talking to anyone else first. we must privately give the person an opportunity to acknowledge what they did was wrong and ask us to forgive them.

Matthew 18:15 “If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over.”

If they won’t listen to you then you may not have won your brother over but you will still need to forgive. Why? So you don’t get trapped into eating the fruit of bitterness, which generally opens your body up to disease. Then you must forgive them as Christ has forgiven you. His words are forever sealed in time…“Father forgive them for they don’t know what they are doing.”  This is not just for them but for you and me as well.

For years I held onto unforgiveness, against a young man who had hit me from behind in a high school fight. Every time I thought about him I felt sick with revenge. I would plot how I would return the favor someday. The funny thing is; I only saw him that one time, but years later he was still knocking me to the ground and humiliating me. My Uncle Ward Graham encouraged me to simply tell God that I forgave the guy and would not hold it against him ever again. That simple prayer set me free, I actually felt better after praying.

What about the emotion of anger?

Paul tells us in Ephesians 4:31 to “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger”.

According to Consumer Reports, “You may need anger control if:

  1. You easily fly off the handle when criticized.
  2. Being frustrated makes you feel like hitting someone.
  3. You think of yourself as hotheaded.
  4. Being annoyed causes you to say nasty things.

So what effect does unforgiveness and anger have on our health? What happens to us when we give the devil a foothold in our life? According to an article in the July 2008 issue of Consumer Reports,

    Anger will dramatically reduces your ability to heal.

Researchers at Ohio State University gave 98 study participants blisters on an arm and monitored how quickly the wound headed. The subjects, ages 24 to 72, also completed questionnaires that assessed how they expressed and managed anger.

Individuals who managed anger well, healed faster, within four days.
Those who did not control anger well, were four times more likely to take more than four days to heal, which researchers noted increase chances of further compounded infections. According to Ronald Glaser, Ph.D., one of the study’s authors, “One way or another anger will compromise your immune response,”4

The study looked at three ways of dealing with anger

  1. Letting it out.
  2. Holding it in.
  3. Controlling it.

The third way was the only way that worked. God’s way of dealing with anger as found in the bible is the only way to true peace and health. The study also looked at relaxation techniques such as Yoga and Tai Chi. the study found that neither Yoga or Tai Chi had any effect on the patient’s ability to heal.

Once again other philosophies and religions fail to produce what they promise. God’s word proves to be the most reliable source of information concerning health and healing.

In another Consumer report issue it was stated that “Negative emotions, such as unforgiveness, anger or stress, trigger the release of hormones that can threaten your heart. And people who experience those emotions, have more heart attacks than calmer, more cheerful types, research suggests. People in rocky relationships, for example, are more prone to heart disease. And those with stressful jobs are more likely to have high blood pressure and, if they return to work too soon after a heart attack, to have a second one. But curbing negative emotions may offer some of the same benefits as a heart-healthy diet and regular exercise”2

When you feel that you have been treated unfairly you get mad. How we handle that anger will affect our health. If you need more help with anger control and forgiveness, an excellent book on forgiveness is The Bait Of Satan by John Bevere. This book does not just give trite and simplistic answers; it outlines a process for defeating unforgiveness, that works, even under the most difficult and hurtful circumstances.

In Ephesians 4:26-27 Paul exhorts us “In your anger do not sin” Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.” Evidently, unforgiveness and going to bed angry will mess up our sleep, which will lower our body’s ability to fight disease and give the devil a foothold in your life. Also, researchers have found that a lack of sleep can also make us stupid, not to mention give you ulcers.6 There is overwhelming evidence that unforgiveness and anger can cause a number of illnesses and shorten your life. The book None Of These Diseases does a wonderful job on this subject.”

 A step by step guide to eliminate unforgiveness.

I have used this process myself, I have helped others through this process and I can testify that it works.

  1. First make sure you have received God’s Forgiveness for yourself. Read John 1:8-9, then ask God to forgive you and thank him that he has forgiven you. Be specific, make sure you have gotten all your sin forgiven by God. He said he would forgive if you ask him.
  2. Make a list of people or organizations that have hurt you.
  3. Acknowledge that you are displeasing God when you don’t forgive others.
  4. Ask God to give you his love for each of the people and organizations on your list.
  5. Then by faith confess with your mouth out loud and forgive each and every one on your list. Tell God that you will not hold these things against them ever again.
  6. As a final act of completion, destroy the list.

When you have done this the enemy of your soul has no legal right to torment you again, physically or mentally. Now God the healer can bless you and give you  new life.

What’s My Attitude Got To Do With It?

Jeanne Calment of Paris France was inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records on October 16, 1995 as the oldest documented human ever. There are many who have claimed to live longer but none have the paperwork to prove it. At the time she was 120 years young. Jeanne remembers watching the Eiffel Tower being constructed; she outlived twenty-seven French presidents, and remembers selling pencils to the famous artist Vincent Van Gogh. At the age of 100, Jeanne was still riding her bike. Jeanne lived to be 122 years 164 days. When asked, “What’s the secret to your long life?” she answered “Laughter!”

It is not just what you eat that determines how healthy you are. It is not how much exercise you get or even how spiritual you are, that will determine how healthy and how long you will live. It is everything the bible says about health and wellness, and one of the things that the Bible mentions often, that will affect your health and mine, is our attitude.

                  “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit                                                                                    dries up the bones.                                                         (Proverbs 17:22)

The King James Version of the Bible translates Proverbs 17:22 “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine Strong’s Hebrew dictionary defines the original word as “a cure,” so a more literal translation would be that “A merry heart is a cure.”

Norman Cousins, Editor of the Saturday Evening Post, found this to be profoundly true. Cousins was dying of cancer, he was told that there was nothing that modern medicine could do for him, his story is now famous. If he was going to die anyway, he decided to stop worrying and working, and spend his last days watching funny movies. As he watched and laughed, he discovered something amazing; ten minutes of laughter produced two hours of pain free sleep. The action he took eventually cured him of terminal cancer. 1

It is now known that laughter and a positive attitude cause your immune system to function better. The opposite is true. Depression, anger, hate, etc. will cause your immune system to shut down.

My wife and I have noted that many, not all, but many people who have cancer, were bitter first. A lot of them were quietly bitter, they put on a happy face but in their hearts they were dying. Often it was because they were in a bad relationship where they felt trapped and helpless. Some were outwardly bitter and it came out almost every time we would speak with them. Their intensity would begin to rise and we would feel a little uncomfortable as they went on and on about other people’s shortcomings or problems. If this sounds like you, one solution is to speak to your soul.

                 “Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me?                            Put your hope in God. For I will yet praise him my Savior and my God.          (Psalm 42:5)

Praise the Lord, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits– who forgives all your sins and                                                            heals all your diseases.                                                          (Psalms 103:1-3)

 King David spoke to his soul, he encouraged his own soul to hope, praise and not to forget all God’s benefits. As we do that the Bible says God will heal all our diseases. Yes, our attitude affects our health.

   “Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.” (Proverbs 16:24)

                                       The tongue has the power of life and death,                                                                               and those who love it will eat its fruit.                                    (Proverbs 18:21)

God is encouraging us to constantly remind our soul to remember all the good things He has done for us, then thank and praise Him. If we put our hope in God, and decide to fill our mind and soul with those thoughts, they will bring healing to our physical bodies. Philippians 4:6-8 sums it up…

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

 If we make an effort to think on good things and we pray and trust God for the rest, God promises to take care of our hearts, minds and bodies.

                           “A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown,                                                                but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones.”                                        (Proverb 12:4)

The attitude of shame and resentment will cause the bones to decay. (Osteoporosis and Arthritis) That is why two people can have the same diet, the same exercise, even the same genes, yet one gets Arthritis and the other doesn’t. Shame and resentment predispose one of them to the crippling bone disease. What is the cure? Open honest communication with the offending person. (See Matthew 18:15) Then if that fails, you will need to have some open honest communication with your Heavenly Father who can heal all wounds and mend every broken heart.

                       “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”                          (Psalm 147:3)

There is a book out called A More Excellent Way; this book catalogs many diseases and the attitude sins that seem to go hand in hand with each particular disease. If you have a lingering disease and nothing is working to heal you of it, you should get this book; it just may hold the key to your healing.

Someone has said that our attitude will determine our altitude. The most effective way I have found to adjust my attitude is to spend more time with Jesus. More time praying, more time reading his word, more time praising and worshiping him at home and church. Isaiah the prophet spoke about him…

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised and we esteemed him not. Surely he took up our infirmities (diseases) and carried our sorrows. Yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions and he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way;                               and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.”                              (Isaiah 53)

If you are struggling with unforgiveness, bitterness or any other disease-producing attitude, Jesus understands and can help. He has experienced every hurt and disappointment that you have and conquered it. The apostle Paul wrote…

We do not have a high priest (Jesus) who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” (Hebrews 4:15-16)

The Bible teaches that man is a three part being: spirit, soul and body. We have a spirit and a soul that reside in our body. Our thoughts and attitudes affect our soul and our soul can affect our bodies for either good or bad.

If you want to live to be over one hundred healthy years like Jeanne Calment of France, you will have to laugh a lot. The Bible says that the fruit of the Holy Spirit is joy (Galatians 5:22). Ask God every day to fill you with his Spirit and with his joy and he will do it. And, you just might heal someone else with your joy.

  2. Set aside time each day to praise God. Make a list of the good things god has given you.
  3. Ask God to forgive you and then thank him that he always does.
  4. Guard your tongue, speak pleasant words, avoid negative speech.
  5. Control your thought life, reject negotive, depressing, critical thoughts and nurture uplifting, encouraging thoughts.
  6. Ask God to fill you with his Holy Spirit every day.

Salt (sodium) reduction has lately become a culinary cause, according to the New York Times. Subway, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Burger King and Taco Bell as well as Campbell Soup and PepsiCo have all publicly vowed to produce lower-sodium products (to a degree last year, Campbell decided to add sodium back into some of its soups after sales began to slide). Critics say that too little of the essential nutrient could be dangerous.

Is salt (sodium) an evil chemical to be avoided like the plague or is it an essential nutrient that we need to consume in order to survive? With experts on both sides of the issue, who are you to believe?

In the Bible we are told that Moses, Aaron and Levi were all priests before God. Moses lived to be 120, Aaron lived to be 123 and Levi lived to be 137.  According to Deuteronomy 34:7, “Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his eyes were not weak nor his strength gone.” What did all three of these men have in common? They were all priests, consequently, they all ate lots of salt. God had commanded that all the meat and grain they consumed be thoroughly salted.

                Leviticus 2:13 “Add salt to all your offerings

God required the people to bring offerings to the temple as a sacrifice for their sins. God’s primary purpose for the offerings was to emphasize the seriousness of sin and prepare us for Christ’s ultimate, better and final offering for sin. Though this was God’s primary purpose, he had a secondary purpose for the offerings.  He used them to meet the dietary needs of the priests which were of the tribe of Levi. When the people brought grains, bulls and lambs to the priests to sacrifice, the priests got to keep some of the sacrifice as their pay. It was where their food came from. All the sacrifices were to be sprinkled with salt. Consequently, everything that the priests and their families ate was salted. Often in the Bible, salt is used as a metaphor for something that is intrinsically good.

In Mark 9:50 Jesus made this statement…               Salt is good.”

God did not give the Levites land like he gave to the other tribes; instead he gave them a portion of the offerings. God entrusted them with temple duties, which made it difficult for them to provide food for their families the way the rest of the tribes did.

Numbers 18:18-19Their meat is to be yours, just as the breast of the wave offering and the right thigh are yours. Whatever is set aside from the holy offerings the Israelites present to the Lord I give to you and your sons and daughters as your regular share. It is an everlasting covenant of salt before the Lord for both you and your offspring.”

Evidently, God saw no problem with his chosen people eating salt. In fact, he made sure that they had an abundance of it.

More and more we are being told to restrict salt intake in our diets. This mantra is so widespread that restaurants are removing salt from their food and removing salt from the tables. Just last week Shary and I had dinner at the Pelican restaurant in Cannon Beach Oregon, it is one of the finest eateries in the area. We met with our daughter Erin and her husband Jake, our son Matthew brought his new girlfriend, Jessie, to meet us, it was a great time with great food, but there was no salt to be found on any table. We had to request a salt shaker, that was hidden away to protect us from the nasty element.

Thirestaurant, like so many others, has given in to the idea that sodium is bad for your health. So they feel they are doing their clients a service to restrict salt. Salt has been more or less placed in the category of junk food.  Health care providers are telling people to reduce or eliminate salt from their diets. This is a crime, and I’ll tell you why. Every summer people suffer from heat exhaustion and die from heat stroke. Virtually all of them are on low sodium (salt) diets. Heat stroke from exercise is one of the 3 leading causes of sudden death in sports activities.  There is a 100% survival rate for heat exhaustion when rapid, proper treatment is given to someone suffering from this affliction.1 According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine heat exhaustion can be treated by drinking a mixture of 1 teaspoon of salt to a quart of water.2 If you end up in the hospital with heat exhaustion or heat stroke, they will give you a saltwater IV.

There were only 5 player deaths in America 1931-1959 from heat. There were 103 player deaths in America 1960-2000.1 Why has the rate of heat related deaths gone up so drastically? Because we are restricting salt intake.

Twenty-seven year old, Korey Stringer, Offensive tackle for the Minnisota Vikings collapses and dies of heat stroke during practice. Korey had a wife and three year old son. Experts say that his death  was completely preventable by drinking more water and getting an adequate amount of salt.

The primary reason given for restricting salt intake is that it causes hypertension and high blood pressure. Since 1996 we have known better! In the May 22nd 1996 edition of the New York Times, there was an article abstracted from the Journal of American Medical Association. This is the journal that virtually every medical doctor in America subscribes to. The article was written by Dr. Alexander Gordon Logan, an epidemiologist and cardiologist at the University Medical School of Toronto Canada.  Dr. Logan examined 56 existing studies on hypertension and high blood pressure as it relates to heart disease and the restriction of salt. These studies included 3,505 patients. In what was probably the most extensive and conclusive research ever done on salt and its effect on heart disease, Dr Logan concluded that restricting salt would not keep you from getting hypertension or high blood pressure. He also concluded that restricting salt from people who have hypertension or high blood pressure would not improve their condition. Dr. Logan said…

“You might as well salt your food to taste. It is a meaningless exercise (a low sodium diet). Don’t get paranoid about salt. It has nothing to do with blood pressure problems. There has never been a single iota of proof that restriction of salt has any benefit.9

In a more recent study, published in the August 2011 issue of the American Journal of Hypertension, 6,250 Patients were sampled. They concluded that there was no strong evidence that cutting salt intake reduces the risk of heart attacks, strokes or death. Actually they did find that the risk of heart disease was 56% higher for people who restricted salt intake as compared to the people with the highest salt consumption.3 The less salt you consume the more likely you are to die from heart disease.

Salt is an essential nutrient. Asking people to eliminate salt from their diets is dangerous.  Dr. Tom Brewer demonstrates this fact in an article he wrote entitled “No Risk Pregnancy Diet”. Here are sickening facts.

Toxemia (a buildup of poisons in the blood stream) is almost three times as high in women who restrict salt. Infant deaths are almost double. When people get heat stroke, what do doctors give them? Saline solution (salt water). Why? Because they have a salt deficiency. Jesus said that salt was good. God told the Israelites to salt all their sacrifices and then eat them.

Yes, if you eat lots of salty chips or other salty foods, you may retain water, but this can be avoided by avoiding foods that taste too salty. The danger caused by too little salt (heat exhaustion, stroke, death) is obviously of more concern than the discomfort of retained water. Also retained water can often be treated with a higher protein diet.

One way we can avoid problems of overeating certain foods is to tune into our God-given regulating mechanism. Your body comes with a mechanism that helps you regulate how much and what types of food you eat. That mechanism is in your taste buds. If you salt food to taste and avoid foods with embedded salt (Salt that is cooked in as opposed to salting after cooking), you can avoid some of the effects of eating too much salt. Your taste buds will send a message to your brain telling you to stop. So when you get the message, stop eating.

A study was conducted at an orphanage where children were given only good food choices at each meal. The children were not told what to eat or how much to eat, however, it was recorded what these kids ate and how much they ate. Some ate nothing but fruit for a period of time, while others ate only meat, etc.… but over the long haul the researchers found that the children balanced their own diets.4  Now it must be repeated that they were only given good choices. God has designed our brains in such a marvelous way that our brains have the ability to determine a nutritional need and then send messages to the taste buds, “this would taste good, eat more of this, stop eating that.” We have observed that our kids will crave citrus (oranges, tangerines, etc.), during flu and cold season. These foods contain a lot of digestible vitamin C. Vitamin C is essential to a strong immune system. So God made our taste buds crave vitamin C when we need it, what an amazing God.

The system God created would work perfectly if we only had good food to choose from. The problem we have is that refined foods (the king’s dainties, Psalm 23:1-2), such as sugar, white flour or monosodium glutamate, these  will unnaturally create cravings that cause unbalanced diets. The addition of monosodium glutamate to chips was the reason for the slogan “Bet you can’t eat just one.” Now, monosodium glutamate, a flavor enhancer, is in all kinds of food. It overrides your God given mechanism and causes you to eat an unbalanced diet.

Read your labels, there is a reason you can’t stop eating. The best salt to use is unrefined sea salt or salt mined from ancient sea beds like Himalayan salt.

In conclusion, stop restricting salt, if your doctor has told you to restrict salt he is not only going against God’s word but he is also going against the latest science. Salt is a nutrient you cannot live without. The latest science tells us that restricting salt will shorten your life. Listen to Jesus, “salt is good”, and enjoy your salted food again. It not only tastes better but it is the smart thing to do!

Here are two concepts that will lengthen and improve your life.

Concept #1      The word of God is not in contradiction to the world of God.

Concept #2      All scripture is God breathed and useful.
