Heart disease, high blood pressure, retained water, depression and Alzheimer’s, all these ailments might be avoided by eating eggs.

 My wife Shary was sick all the time as she was growing up. Doctors gave her lots of drugs and told her that she would never be able to carry a baby full term. In college Shary began to be dissatisfied with her poor health. At a bookstore, she stumbled onto the classic, “Eat Right, Live Longer” by LeLord Kordell.4 This book started Shary thinking that her food choices, like whether to eat eggs or junk food, were more important than she had previously thought. About a year later, Shary became pregnant with our first child. When Shary went to the clinic to get her pregnancy test results, the nurse said in one sentence, “The test is positive, would you like an abortion referral?” Shary was shocked at the question, ultimately, instead of aborting, she determined to learn everything she could about having healthy babies.  This article is about eggs, whether they are good for you or not. The Bible says that eggs are a great gift and real science is catching up to that fact, after getting it wrong for a half century.

After studying nutrition in college, reading hundreds of books and articles on nutrition and listening to hours and hours of nutritional lectures, Shary and I have improved our health dramatically. But there was one giant problem, although we were seeing great improvements in our health, not everything we read worked and not all the “experts” agreed. So who can you trust? Some say milk is bad, others say it’s great. Some say red meat is the worst thing you can eat, others say it is the best. Many say that eggs will spike your cholesterol and ultimately kill you and others say eggs are the perfect protein. So who do you believe, who has a corner on the truth.?

We have come to the conclusion that there is only one infallible source of information about what is good for us and what is not, it is the Bible; God’s Word.

                                                      Proverbs 3:5-8                                                          Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;             in all your ways acknowledge him. And he will make your paths straight.                              Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil.                         This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.

Secular wisdom changes almost as often as the seasons change. Self-help and textbooks change as fast as they can be printed. But…

               The Bible never changes, because                 it’s advice is from God, the creator.

He says that if we trust him and his word, and don’t lean on man’s understanding of the world, it will bring health to our bodies. This is exactly what we have found to be true. Shary has eaten a lot of eggs over the years and never had a miscarriage. She produced thirteen healthy babies and she is still healthy herself. So what does the Bible say about egg consumption?

                                                Luke 11:11 Jesus said…                                           “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for… an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Jesus could have used anything as an example of a good gift. But he was trying to get across the idea that our Heavenly Father will give us the incredibly good gift of the Holy Spirit. So he used an egg as his earthly example of a very good gift.

Eggs are a gift from God. Eggs are one of the best foods you can eat. Eggs are considered a perfect protein. Eggs contain all the essential amino acids in the perfect proportions so that your body can use them completely.5 If one of the amino acids is only at, say, half the necessary ratio, your body will only be able to digest and use half of the protein that you have consumed. Interestingly enough, peanut butter only has about half of the necessary amino acids needed to form a complete protein, but milk has all the amino acids that peanut butter lacks. This is why many people crave a glass of milk after eating peanut butter. 12 Your God given taste buds are detecting an imbalance in the good food you have eaten and are sending a message to your brain to balance your diet. Psalm 139:14 says, “I will praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

Shary and I have been teaching childbirth classes since 1976. Shary has also been a midwife to many, many women. Among the thousands of students we have taught; one of the most common problems in pregnancy is toxemia, which is also called preeclampsia (a self-poisoning of the mother and baby). The initial symptoms of toxemia, are high blood pressure, swelling and protein in the urine. Toxemia is very serious because the baby and mother are not able to eliminate toxins (poison) that the body normally flushes out. Standard practice to is to medicate the mother, put her on bed rest and take the baby by cesarean section.2

Toxemia is a very progressive and potentially fatal condition and remains a leading cause of miscarriage, premature birth, and infant mortality in the United States and around the world. An estimated 50,000 women die every year from toximia.4

When doctors test women for toxemia, they will take urine samples and tell the woman she has too much protein in her urine. Then she will be told to cut down on her protein intake. Actually, what they are detecting are amino acids that are being discarded by the body. Because most woman’s diets are unbalanced and lack sufficient protein, their bodies will kick out the excess amino acids. The result is that their body’s mechanism for ridding itself of toxins is starved. That system needs a lot of protein and it isn’t getting it. Shary has been able to help virtually every mother who has come to her, by getting them to up their protein intake. How does she do it? By getting these women to eating at least two eggs every day and adding other lean proteins.  Two eggs are the best source, because eggs are a perfectly balanced protein.

Dr. Tom Brewer, the head obstetrician in a large hospital, saw over 500 babies born each year. He recorded that one third of the pregnant mothers, approximately 166 in all, had developed toxemia. In an effort to reduce the toxemia rate, he simply asked the women to eat two eggs and drink a quart of milk every day. After one year under the new plan, the hospital had only recorded two cases of toxemia. One of the women had triplets, and he thought maybe she needed to eat four eggs a day. The other patient was mentally ill and they were never sure if she had followed the instructions. By simply adding two eggs and a quart of milk to these 500 women’s diets, toxemia was almost completely eradicated. 1

The March of Dimes has done extensive research to determine the cause of birth defects. As early as 1975 the march of Dimes was encouraging pregnant mothers to eat eggs, vegetables and drink milk.

The symptoms of toxemia; high blood pressure and retained water, do not just affect pregnant women. If you have these symptoms the solution is often the same, increase your protein intake, eat eggs.

But what about the cholesterol in eggs? Each year Americans spend 117 billion dollars on cholesterol testing. Isn’t cholesterol bad for you?  First of all, eggs contain lecithin, which breaks down cholesterol. Also; there is good cholesterol and bad cholesterol and, you guessed it, the cholesterol in eggs is the good kind.

Eggs contain cholesterol, and cholesterol is an essential nutrient. That means that your body must have it. Your body actually makes about 10% of your daily need for cholesterol; but it must get the other 90% from your diet. According to Dr. Joel Wallach, we have created some horrible diseases in our quest to limit cholesterol and egg consumption. For example, Alzheimer’s disease did not exist 40 years ago, not in any medical textbook, not in any medical dictionary. The first mention of it as a disease entity was in 1979. In the seventies we began to restrict choloresteral and immedietly we saw a new disease develop. It is a deficiency disease that effects half of all 70 year old’s. It is now the number four killer of people over 65.

Alzheimer’s is caused by a medical theory that ignores God’s word. Many doctors claim that it is genetic. Now let’s examine that theory for a moment. Since Alzheimer’s has only occurred in the last 20-40 years, how could it possibly be genetic? Even evolutionists don’t believe you can change an entire people group’s genetics in 20-40 years.

The onset of this nutritional disease does coincide with the limiting of foods containing cholesterol. Fact: the brain is 75% cholesterol; by limiting the amount of cholesterol, we are starving our bodies of the materials necessary to build brain matter. According to Dr. Wallach you can eliminate any chance of getting Alzheimer’s by eating at least two eggs a day. Dr. Wallach has done extensive studies with animals and was able to create and eliminate the symptoms of Alzheimer’s by either limiting or increasing cholesterol in their diets. Dr. Wallach has been nominated twice for the Nobel Prize in medicine. The normal safe cholesterol level is 220-270. According to Wallach if anyone tries to get you to lower your cholesterol level below 200, run for the hills. If your cholesterol level is below 200, your risk of intracranial stroke goes up 200%, liver cancer goes up 300% and you double your likelihood of suffering from depression.

Unfortunately, my own, very healthy, parents were advised by their doctor to limit their fat and cholesterol intake, so they stopped eating eggs and butter. Shary and I tried to share with them what we have learned but they insisted that their doctor knew best. They would follow his advice and shortly after eliminating eggs, my dad suffered more and more from depression. My mother went into full blown Alzheimer’s. Currently my mother is in a memory care facility, if we bring her a gift she will thank us every time she sees the gift as if it is the first time, sometimes five or six times an hour. So the only upside to all of this is that we get a lot more credit for a single gift than we used to. The down side is that she may think the gift came from one of my brothers instead of me.

Many people believe that eggs are bad for their hearts. On November 15, 1995, the American Heart Association announced a study of 141 volunteers with a cholesterol level of 227. After six months of eating two eggs per day the American Heart Association came out with this statement…

“We always assumed that eggs were bad for you because they contained cholesterol; but it now appears after this study that two eggs per day won’t hurt.”

I am sixty-four years young, I personally eat at least two eggs per day. I feel great, my blood pressure is great, I can still run and play with my teenage son and teenage grandchildren. Protein and cholesterol are two of the most important nutrients in your body, they make up most of your brain and muscle tissue. Eggs are the best source of protein and cholesterol. Jesus said they are good gifts. Two a day is a great foundation to a long and healthy life. Happy eating.

What about pork and good health? To mention that pork might not be good to eat, is fighting words to many people.  So, I am asking you to extend to me a little Christian love and mercy as I attempt to make the case for avoiding pork products. I think you will live longer and have healthier lives if you avoid pork. Yes, I know it tastes great, but, human experience, science and God’s word, may prove it is not worth the risk. So let’s take a look at all three of these.

Human experience                                                                                     Most Christians, and most Americans, believe they can eat whatever they want. Jews believe it is not good to eat pork. In Israel, Jews and non Jews tend to avoid pork. Is there any proof that avoiding pork products, is a healthier practice than eating a lot of pork, like Americans? According to a report by Jerusalem’s Taub Center for Social Policy Studies, Israeli life expectancy at birth is 81 years compared to 78 years for Americans.1 That one fact, that non pork eating Jews, tend to live longer than pork eating Americans, may not be conclusive but if it is connected to some actual science then it may be a factor.

Science                                                                                                       When we share with people that eating pork is unhealthy, we are informed that we obviously aren’t up to date on the latest information about pork consumption. Evidently, everyone knows that with our modern technology in food processing and cooking, all ill effects of eating pork have been eliminated, or are they?

In the January 2013 edition of Consumer Reports a different story was told. Consumer Reports stated:

“Our analysis of pork-chop and ground-pork samples from around the U.S. found that Yersinia enterocolitica, a bacterium that can cause fever, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, was widespread. Some samples harbored other potentially harmful bacteria, including salmonella. And there are more reasons to be concerned about “the other white meat”.

Some of the bacteria we found in 198 samples proved to be resistant to antibiotics commonly used to treat people. The frequent use of low-dose antibiotics in pork farming may be accelerating growth of drug-resistant “superbugs” that threaten human health.

About one-fifth of the 240 pork products we analyzed in a separate test harbored low levels of the drug ractopamine, which the U.S. approved in 1999 to promote growth and leanness in pigs.  It’s commonly used in pigs raised for food in the U.S. but is banned in the European Union, China and Taiwan.

Yersinia enterocolitica was found in 69% of the tested pork samples. It infects about 100,000 Americans a year, especially children. We found salmonella, staphylococcus aureus, or listeria monocytogenes, in 3 to 7 percent of samples.

Thirteen of the fourteen staphylococcus samples we isolated from pork were resistant to one or more antibiotics, so were six of eight salmonella samples, 12 of 19 enterococcus samples, and 121 of 132 yersinia samples. One sample was identified as MRSA, a drug-resistant and sometimes fatal staph.”2

Why are all those disease causing bacteria in pork products? Factory-farmers gobble up 80 percent of the antibiotics sold in the U.S. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has estimated that 67 percent of human diseases are of animal origin, and according to Robert Martin, director of food system policy at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, “there are a number of specific studies that have linked antibiotics in animals to drug-resistant human infections,”3

What about pork products from other countries? Food from other countries can carry even more health risks. Check out these two YouTube videos. One shows parasites in uncooked pork and the other shows cooked pork that was reheated in a microwave. Evidently these parasites are really tough.

      Eating Pork can affect your moods and cause migraines.

The processing aids used in the most popular cuts of pork—ham, sausage, bratwursts, and the like—cause depression. “Sugar, salt, and nitrate preservatives used in these products can trigger low moods, migraines, and even swollen ankles,” writes Drew Ramsey, MD, coauthor of  The Happiness Diet.3

According to Consumer Reports, Johns Hopkins and MD Drew Ramsey, Pork products, not only contain disease strains that are resistant to antibiotics, they also contain hormones, preservatives and sugar, that are making Americans sick and depressed, especially children.

God’s Word, what does it say about eating pork?

Leviticus 11:4-8                                                     Nevertheless these you shall not eat among those that chew the cud or those that have   cloven hooves: the camel, because it chews the cud but does not have cloven hooves, is unclean to you; the rock hyrax, because it chews the cud but does not have cloven hooves, is unclean to you; the rabbit, because it chews the cud but does not have cloven hooves, is unclean to you; and the pig, though it divides the hoof, having cloven hooves, yet does not chew the cud, is unclean to you.Their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcasses you shall not touch. They are unclean to you.

                                            Isaiah 62:2,4b,5b                                                            All day long I have held out my hands to an obstinate people who walk in ways not goodWho eat the flesh of pigs and whose pots hold broth of unclean meat; Such people are smoke in my nostrils”

Leviticus 11:4-8 talks about white meat (pig, rabbit, horse, dog, cat, rat). God said these animals are not to be eaten. Can you eat them? Sure, you can eat anything you want. Paul said in…

                                          1 Corinthians 6:12 6:12                                                    “Everything is permissible but not everything is beneficial…but I will not be mastered by anything.  Food for the stomach and the stomach for food.”

Unclean food won’t spiritually defile you, it will just shorten your life. It’s not a sin to eat pork, it’s just not physically beneficial. Jesus said what comes out of our mouth, spiritually defiles us, not what goes in our mouths.

Many people think, that because old testament rules about food do not apply to us spiritually anymore, that they also don’t apply to us physically. Let’s just think about that for a second. The old testament says that seagulls are not good for you and that cats and dogs are not good food. Do we really believe that since Jesus died on the cross that all of a sudden those animals became healthy to eat? I live on the coast of Oregon and the thought of eating a seagull would make most of my friends sick to their stomachs.

I have been traveling to third world countries, two and three times a year for over twenty years. Many of my missionary friends ignore God’s advice concerning pork and other foods. They eat pork and shellfish and; they almost always get sick and I don’t. God did not make his laws just to see if we would be obedient, he made them to keep us out of harm’s way.

The animals in Leviticus 11:1-3 (red meat animals, those with a split hoof and chew the cud) have a four-stomach digestive system designed to convert vegetation into protein, calcium, etc. These animals are not as likely to carry diseases that affect humans. The animals that God said not to eat have a single stomach digestive system very similar to ours, which also makes them susceptible to almost all the parasites and diseases that we are plagued with.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), between November 2002 and July 2003, an outbreak of SARS in southern China caused 774 deaths reported in 37 countries. The epidemic has a 9.6% fatality rate. The epidemic was found to be related to the eating of cats, a white meat animal like pigs, the bible says not to eat. Obeying God’s advice concerning white meat would have spared these unfortunate people a lot of pain, suffering and lives cut short.

To say that modern science has eliminated the need to avoid pork products is to ignore the facts, and, put yourself and your family at risk. God’s advice is timeless and valuable. Before we had scientists who could look through powerful microscopes and see disease producing bacteria, God knew what food carried sickness and death and warned us not to eat it.

In our blog about red meat, we shared a study done in Colorado concerning people who lived to be over 100 years old.

+In that study they found only one thing that all centenarians had in common. They all ate red meat, the meat God said was good to eat, twice a day, not white meat, that God said not to eat. If you want to live out your full lifespan you will have to eat red meat like the Bible recommends and avoid white meat. Happy eating!!!

Vitamins and minerals part 3

         Vitamin C; The Granddaddy Of All Vitamins!

Genetics or vitamins, what will determine how long and well you live? Just this week a reporter for ABC news announced that our genes are truly the driving force for how long we will live. The news agency was promoting the idea that you really have no control over how long or well you live, it is all in your genetic makeup. So why bother to eat right and take supplements like vitamin C, if your genetic time clock will stop at its predetermined time anyway? The scientific evidence is abundant and the bible is clear on this issue. Your genes are not the driving force that determines your longevity. First, I am going to share two, out of hundreds of Bible verses, that declare God’s opinion about our ability to lengthen and improve our lives through our life-choices. Then I will give you the scientific evidence that confirms God’s word.

  • Ephesians 6:1-3 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise),“that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”
  • Deuteronomy 11:18,19a Observe therefore all the commands I am giving you today, so that you may have the strength to go in and take over the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, and so that you may live long”

The bible does not say that your genes determine your longevity. The bible says your actions determine your strength and longevity. And if that ABC reporter wanted to be honest, the article in Scientific American he was referring to, did also give credit to lifestyle changes for promoting long life.4 True science is not in contradiction to God’s word, it actually confirms the Word of God. The study of epigenetics is another proof of this.

Scientific American has numerous articles on the new science of Epigenetics. Epigenetics is the discovery that lifestyle can change your genes. That is, your genetics are not static they can be altered. We will discuss more about epigenetics in a later article, stay tuned.

            Linus Pauling, Author of “How to live longer and feel better”

Linus Pauling the only person to ever win two undivided Nobel Prizes.1 Pauling has been listed among the “20 greatest scientists of all time.”[6][7]  Francis Crick acknowledged Pauling as the “father of molecular biology“.[8][9]

Linus Pauling is a great case against the idea that your genes determine your longevity. Pauling’s mother only lived to the age of 45, and his father died at the age of 34; not exactly the best genetic heritage that you could ask for. Despite his poor genetic makeup, Pauling lived to the ripe old age of 93 and was very productive in his later years. He attributes his longevity and strength to vitamin C and other supplements.

Linus Pauling, over his lifetime, tried many times to get the Mayo Clinic to repeat his studies his Studies showing vitamin C’s effect on Cancer, but they refused, or altered his techniques and in the end denied that his research in vitamins and minerals was of any value. It seems odd that a man of his stature and renown was unable to get the mainstream medical community to repeat his studies to see for themselves if his theories were true. But, Pauling persisted, and the world has embraced vitamin C as a valuable supplement. Unfortunately, most people who do take vitamin C don’t have any idea what quantities are necessary to get the results that Pauling promised. So here is the unedited version of Pauling journey to greatness and his recommended quantity of vitamin C intake per day.

In 1941, at age 40, Pauling was diagnosed with Bright’s disease,  this disease is distinguished by, inflammation of serous membraneshemorrhagesapoplexyconvulsionsblindnesscoma and, if not treated properly, death. Following the recommendations of Thomas Addis, who actively recruited Ava Helen Pauling, Linus’s wife, as “nutritionist, cook, and eventually as deputy ‘doctor'”, Pauling was able to control the disease with diet changes and vitamin supplements.[134]  It was this instance that convinced Pauling that many deadly diseases could be controlled or eliminated with vitamin and mineral supplements.

In 1966 Pauling started taking 3 grams of vitamin C every day to prevent colds. It worked so well that Pauling published a scientific review of the practice.

This is a white blood cell eating  bacteria.

In the 1970’s, Linus Pauling discovered that it was the white blood cells that need a high dose of vitamin C… to combat the common cold. He also discovered that vitamin C was needed by white blood cells so that they could phagocytize (ingest and destroy) viruses and bacteria.2 This was a major breakthrough in human wellness.

In 1996 a website was created expounding Pauling’s treatment of heart disease, which it referred to as Pauling Therapy. Pauling proved that heart disease can be treated and even cured using only Lysine and Vitamin C and without drugs or heart operations.[139]

In 1971 Pauling and Ewan Cameron, a cancer surgeon, wrote many technical papers and a popular book, Cancer and Vitamin C, that discussed their observations. Pauling made vitamin C popular with the public[141] and eventually published two studies of a group of 10terminal patients that proved vitamin C increased survival by as much as four times, compared to untreated patients.[142][143]  In that study they gave terminal cancer patients large-dose vitamin C supplements (10,000 mg. per day) they saw substantial relief in the 5th to 10th day of treatment. Their patient’s experience increased well-being, tumors were retarded or stopped. Particularly distressing pain from tumor pressure stopped and there was a relief from respiratory distress,3

Another landmark study was done by Dr. Abram Hoffer. Hoffer is a specialist in psychiatry, and in his Canadian practice (in Victoria, British Columbia). More than a decade ago he began to register cancer patients who had been sent to him because of emotional distress, usually, severe depression or anxiety. Dr. Hoffer put them on a regimen involving an average of 12,000 mg. per day  of vitamin C and large amounts of vitamin E, vitamin B3, other B vitamins, beta-carotene, and some minerals. Initially, this was done to improve their mental state, but other benefits quickly became evident.

In a report published in the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine in 1990, Dr. Hoffer and Dr. Cameron, tracked 134 patients with advanced cancer who had come under Dr. Hoffer’s care. The report noted that 33 patients, refused the vitamins and minerals Dr. Hoffer recommended; those patients averaged only a few months of life after beginning therapy. The 101 patients with advanced cancer who followed the vitamin regimen prescribed by Dr. Hoffer, on average, lived 16 times longer than those who did not. Many of the 101 patients were still alive when the study was concluded, so the results may have been even greater.

So, if you don’t have cancer, do you still need vitamin C? Yes, vitamin C is the granddaddy of all vitamins and yields many many great benefits. Here are some other common ailments that vitamin C can cure.

Among other things, allergies, loose teeth and receding gums are a problem of insufficient vitamin C intake. In 2001 my wife’s allergies got really bad, she happened on to some information that suggested vitamin C was a natural antihistamine. Shary started taking about 5,000 mg. of vitamin C, she has never taken allergy medicine since she substituted it with vitamin C. More recently Shary had muscle, joint and tooth pain, she was also experiencing loose teeth and receding gums. Nothing she tried seemed to work until she started taking 10,000 mg of vitamin C. After the first night her teeth quit hurting and her joints started feeling better, she said it was the first time in months that she woke up without pain.

Vitamin C helps your immune system fight off all diseases. Most of us are not taking enough vitamin C to do any good. The governments recommended daily allowance of only 60 mg/ day, will barely keep you from having scurvy. Linus Pauling who made vitamin C a household word, recommended we take 3,000 to 10,000 mg/ day.

Here are some foods that are rich in vitamin C.

  • Yellow bell peppers 569% of the RDA per pepper.
  • Red bell peppers, 349% of the RDA per pepper.
  • Green bell peppers, 220% of the RDA per pepper.
  • Oranges, 116% of the RDA per orange.
  • Broccoli has 149% of the RDA
  • KIWI fruit has 151%
  • Watermelon has 112% per cup.

Note: natural sources tend to be more digestible, thus, more usable to your body. Vitamin C is water soluble so it does not store up in the body and must be eaten every day. If you take too much vitamin C you will get the opposite of constipation (The other way of saying this seems so disagreeable) 🙂 Some people find this an added benefit.

 God says  it is what you do that determines how well and how long you will live, not your genetic make-up or your parental heritage.

Vitamin D deficiancy

Do we need vitamins and minerals in our diets?

 

Do vitamins and minerals do any good? Can’t we get everything we need from a healthy diet? Aren’t we just wasting our money on vitamins and minerals, peeing away our hard earned money? These are common questions and ideas promoted by Colleges, healthcare providers and well meaning friends. But did you know there are at least 16 essential vitamins, 12 essential amino acids, 3 essential fatty acids and 8 essential sugars. You don’t need herbs, you don’t need drugs, you need all 90 essential nutrients to live a disease free life. Vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients are not just a nice idea they are absolutely  vital to a long and sickness-free life. Let me give you a few examples.

My wife Shary had sever bleeding problems at every birth except one and she almost bled to death more than once. After those births it took weeks for her to regain her strength. So what was different at that one birth? It was when our son Nathan was born, Shary had bled a lot with our first three kids and doctor Peter Bours decided that he would give her a shot of vitamin K, right before the birth, hoping it would help. While she was in labor he gave her the shot and virtually no bleeding took place at that birth. Why did it work so well? Vitamin K is one of the necessary nutrients needed for blood clotting. All essential nutrients have specific roles in our wellness. Another problem associated with sever bleeding is that it causes the person to become anemic.

Iron suppliments are routinely prescribed by doctors when people become anemic. Common symptoms of anemia are; (fatigue, pale skin, weakness, shortness of breath, chest pain, frequent infections, headaches, dizziness or lightheadedness, cold hands and feet, inflammation or soreness of tongue, brittle nails, fast heartbeat, unusual cravings for non-nutritive substances, such as ice, dirt or starch, poor appetite, especially in infants and children, uncomfortable tingling or crawling feeling in your legs, restless leg syndrome)1. A great source of Iron are raisins, the iron in raisins is almost 100% digestible. Most Iron supplements are made from ground up iron, which can cause internal bleeding and are mostly indigestible. If you have been taking iron supplements and your iron levels are not going up, try raisins. The best minerals are from plant derived sources.

Vitamin D   According to Pubic Health Review; “Early in the twentieth century more than 80 percent of children in industrialized Europe and North America were ravaged by the devastating skeletal consequences of rickets. fortification of dairy products with vitamin D and widespread use of cod liver oil eradicated rickets as a significant health problem by the late 1930s. Many countries mandated the fortification of milk with vitamin D to prevent rickets during wartime shortages. Vitamin D deficiency has again become a major public health interest with its association with osteoporosis, osteomalacia, fractures, and more recently with prevention of cancer, diabetes, heart disease and other chronic illnesses.”2  Why the uptick in vitamin D deficiencies? Because most people have been taught that whole milk is bad so they drink skim milk or 2%. Vitamin D is stored in the milk fat so we now have a generation of people who again are suffering from Vitamin D deficiencies. Once again we find that if we eat our food the closest to the way God made it, we will be better off.

In College my wife and I were told that there was, “no need to take vitamins and minerals, it was just a waste of your money. You can get all you need by eating a healthy diet.”  That one statement is so outrageous and so uneducated that the people who say such things are either lying or they are completely unaware of the world around them. Virtually every one knows why sailors of old got scurvy, and what to do about it. They were suffering from a Vitamin C deficiency. It is almost impossible to buy milk that doesn’t have vitamin D added because a lack of vitamin D would cause an epidemic of rickets.

It’s almost impossible to get white flour that is not enriched with vitamins and minerals, because without those vitamins we would again, have an epidemic of pellagra. Before the addition of vitamins and minerals to white flour, pellagra was the worst epidemic to ever hit the U.S.3

Let me reiterate if someone tells you that you don’t need to take vitamins and minerals in our society, that person is mentally, a couple of fries short of a happy meal. If you are suffering from anemia everyone knows you need Iron supplements. If your child has rickets they will be given vitamin D supplements. The idea that we do not need to supplement our diets with vitamins and minerals is foolish if not a crime.

I was talking to a man I met in California, while attending a wedding. When I found out how old he was I asked him for his secret, he looked half his age, maybe even younger. He said he didn’t have one so I asked him if he exercised and he told me he had a Fitbit that made sure he walked a certain number of steps each day. I asked him if he took vitamins and minerals and he said well sure, quit a few each day. So he didn’t have a secret he just did what any intelligent person would do, moderately exercise each day and take vitamins and minerals to supplement their diet.

So how do you know what to take and how much?

In the seventies, I went to school to be a dairyman. In that school we were taught to spot symptoms in dairy cows and then to treat those symptoms with vitamins and minerals.  There are veterinary books that describe symptoms and corresponding vitamin and mineral treatments.  They work!  One time Shary was complaining of all the symptoms that dairymen called “milk fever or cow fever”. I chose my words carefully making certain that I did not use the word “cow” and explained to her that she was experiencing a vitamin and mineral deficiency. We purchase what  she needed and it worked, all the symptoms where gone. So should you get that dairyman’s manual? Nope, we are not cows, though some deficiencies diseases are common among all mammals, you need to get a vitamin and mineral reference for you.

Dr. Joel Wallach has produced a corresponding volume for humans called Lets play Doctor. Another great book is Prescription for Nutritional Healing by Phyllis A. Balch

Purchasing one or both of these books is a must for anyone who wants out of the “system” and is ready to take charge of his or her own health.  There must be something wrong with the system when American citizens are paying 1.2 trillion dollars in health care each year.  And the American people are less healthy than almost all other industrial nations.  According to Joel Wallach we give our dogs 40 essential minerals in Science Diet dog food.  We give lab rats 28 essential minerals in Purina food pellets and we only give our human babies 12 minerals in their baby food.  And we wonder why young children have poor health and are getting autism, cancer and other horrible diseases in unheard of numbers.

I make a lot of references to Dr. Wallach, because he is one of the few health experts that rarely gives advice about food that is contrary to the teachings of the Bible. He has also done some of the most extensive research we have ever seen. The wonderful thing is that through research he has come to some of the same conclusions that we have come to by studying the Scriptures. True science is not in opposition to the teachings of the bible. The world of God is not in conflict with the word of God. The more scientist study, the more they find that the God of the bible is the God who created man and the earth.

Here is another American problem of epidemic proportions.

Arthritis and joint problems are at epidemic proportions and are some of the easiest problems to fix. They include Aching hands, knee problems, hip problems, rotator cup and shoulder problems, disc and back problems, foot and arch problems. The reason we in the States have so much trouble with this is because we do not eat all the connective tissue in meat. We also rarely boil soup stock any more with bone in it. Both of these practices provide us with cartilage material and calcium in our food.   I have lost count of the number of people I have helped to get rid of these unnecessary afflictions. The long term solution is to boil our meat with the bone on it and drink the soup stock.

But; the quick fix is a packet of Knox gelatin, (ground up connective tissue) which can be purchased at any grocery store for very little money, mixed in a glass of calcium enriched Minute Maid orange juice, once a day, along with a vitamin and mineral supplement that contains all 90 essential nutrients. (You can get that at American Youngevity). The younger you are the quicker the cure. If you are over 30, it just takes a little longer.  By the way, we stole this idea from Dr. Wallach.

Your body needs raw materials to do its job.  If you are having joint problems your body needs Calcium and joint material.  A friend of mine, who had stopped playing soccer because of knee pain, told me that his knees had swollen badly and he had to take painkillers every day just to walk and move around.  I suggested he try Knox gelatin.  He took my advice, in about a month, he told me that he was pain free, without medication. A high school freshman told me that he couldn’t run track because of knee problems, I suggested Knox gelatin. He was running in only a couple of weeks and by the end of the season, he had improved to the point that he took fifth in the one-hundred-meter dash at the state track meet. Another young man told me that he couldn’t pitch on the high school baseball team anymore because of a rotator cup problem. You guessed it. He did it, and he ended up pitching through the entire season. The following year he pitched his team to a state championship. Doctors will tell you that it is impossible to regrow cartilage and they are right, that is, if you do not give your body the raw materials it needs. I am not using these examples to show that you will improve your athletic ability, but to show that people who are using their joints to the maximum can not only improve their joint health with the addition of proper nutrients, but can also thrive under even the most rigorous conditions.

In the September 24, 1993 edition of the Denver Post, the Harvard Medical School and Boston V.A. Hospital published a study. They did the study to prove Dr. Wallach wrong. Dr. Wallach was prescribing the above, inexpensive formula, to people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and knee and other joint problems.  Harvard picked arthritis sufferers for their study who had failed to respond in any way to standard medical treatment.  The only thing left for these patients was joint replacement surgery.  They were asked to postpone their surgeries and suffer 90 more days. 59 volunteers were found (Not sure I would have volunteered). 28 received Knox gelatin only, and 31 received placebos. The 31 who took placebos got worse.  So what happened to the other 29?  After 10 days all the pain and inflammation was gone. In 30 days they had full use of their hands, and after 90 days they had maximum return of function.  Harvard’s report was that “The DRUG had been beneficial.”  In 90 days Knox gelatin had become a drug. So what did Harvard Medical School do? They patented their discovery, and are selling it to their patients at an unbelievably exaggerated price.4

If anyone tells you that taking vitamins is a waste of time and money; they either trying to sell you prescription drugs instead, or  they may be rowing but they don’t have all of their mental oars in the water. Anyone who thinks you don’t need supplements, couldn’t pour water out of a boot with instructions on the heel. So if you want to live a long sickness free life in our society, drugs are not the answer, essential nutrients are. God has told us what food is good, what food is bad and how to treat the land so that our food will meet our needs. God says that refined foods are so bad for you and me that eating them is like cutting our own throats with a knife (Proverbs 23:1-3) and according to John chapter 1 and Hebrews 1:2; Jesus created the heavens and the earth and everything in them. Everything includes Man and Food for man. His instructions are in his Word, the Bible, for our benefit. Happy eating.

Vitamins and Minerals in the Bible?

Vitamins and Minerals. Twenty plus years ago, I was helping coach my son Peter’s high school soccer team. One day after practice, he challenged me to a foot race. He was the captain of the team, but I thought I could still keep up with him (oh, the foolishness of midlife). So we lined up with the other players and coaches watching; someone yelled go, and off we went, male egos and all. We were neck and neck about halfway down the field when it felt like a giant hand grabbed my ankle and threw me to the ground. As I struggled to stand up, I looked and there was a huge indentation in my left thigh. That pulled muscle created a hole that is still there to this day.

Pulled muscles had always been a problem for me, but the problem got much worse after I had a physically traumatic experience climbing Pikes Peak in Colorado. When we began the climb, we were told that we had to make the summit by a certain time because there was increased lightning danger after that. So with very little air, and quickly trying to climb from 6,000 ft. to the 14,000 ft. summit, I evidently pushed myself too far. I just remember the last hour or so, it took every big of will power to just put one foot in front of the other. I now realize that that event had depleted my already low mineral levels.  I just didn’t feel right for months. This is a common experience for people who have had any kind of trauma.  Joel Wallach says, “Exercise without supplementation is suicide” When I finally realized what I was suffering from, I took massive amounts of vitamins and minerals. About two weeks later the symptoms were gone.  I was my old self again; except for the pulled muscles.

If you have one or more of the following symptoms, you probably have a copper deficiency: chronic pulled muscles, gray hair, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, sagging skin, crow’s feet, to name a few. I had most of these, especially pulled muscles.  It got to the point that every time I went to play soccer, I would warm up and stretch for at least 15 minutes and within five minutes I had pulled a muscle.  Some of them were quite serious. It just about ended my participation in soccer, one of my favorite pastimes.

After listening to a lecture by Dr. Joel Wallach, I realized my problem was not old age, but a severe copper deficiency.  So I followed Dr. Wallach’s advice and began taking 2 mg of copper a day. In only a couple of weeks, I was able play soccer with only a minimum amount of warming up and stretching. The pulled muscles were gone!

Copper is the necessary nutrient for elasticity in our tissues, muscles, skin, arteries and veins.

Now for the most important information about copper; the most permanent symptom of copper deficiency is a ruptured aneurysm, which usually ends in death.  If your veins aren’t elastic, they, like your muscles, will break or rupture instead of stretching.  If you have any of the above mentioned symptoms, get some copper today.   It is cheap and the capsules are some of the smallest and easiest to take. They could literally save your life.

Otherwise healthy people who may only lack one or two vital vitamins or minerals die by the thousands each year; I could have been one of them. So, where in the Bible does it say we need to take vitamin or mineral supplements? It doesn’t but there are some instructions in the bible that could keep us from having so many vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

Leviticus 25:1-5 “The Lord said to Moses on Mount Sinai. Speak to the Israelites and say to them: When you enter the land I am going to give you, the land itself must observe a Sabbath to the Lord. For six years sow your fields, and for six years prune your vineyards and gather their crops. But in the seventh year the land is to have a Sabbath of rest, a Sabbath to the Lord. Do not sow your fields or prune your vineyards.  Do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the grapes of your untended vines.  The land is to have a year of rest.”

The U.S. Department of Agriculture stated as early as 1923, that our soils were completely depleted of minerals and that they must be supplemented. They also stated that it only takes 5-10 years to deplete the soil.3 God said let it rest every seven years, which gives the soil time to release its minerals and allows needed minerals to be available again to plants. By the way, some people assume that organically grown food is always better. Not if it is grown in depleted soil; plants cannot manufacture minerals that aren’t readily available in the soil. Plants can only absorb minerals that have leached out of the larger rocks and that takes time.

Christopher Byrd, a bestselling author, had the idea that all you need to do is eat organically grown food. He wrote “Secrets of the Soil” and “Secret Life of Plants.”4 He practiced what he preached and lived on organically grown food.  He did not supplement with any vitamins or minerals.  He believed that organically grown food was the answer to long life.  He died at the age of 68, seven years short of the average American couch potato. He had a ruptured aneurysm, and died of a simple copper deficiency.  Either letting the soil rest every seven years or supplementing his diet with a few pennies of copper per day and he might have lived to be 100.

According to Harvard Medical School, there are 14 essential vitamins and 16 essential minerals that you need to be conscious of for good health. Essential means that you cannot live without them in your diet. According to Dr. Joel Wallach there are 60 essential minerals, 16 essential vitamins, 12 essential amino acids and 3 essential fatty acids that have been identified so far.1 These nutrients are necessary for our bodies to function properly. The normal way for us to get the 60 essential minerals is for the plants we eat to extract them from the soil.  Also, the best way for the animals we eat to get those minerals is to get them from plants that live in soil rich with those minerals. To sum it up, if it’s not in the soil, or not in the soil in a form that is available to the plants, it won’t be in the plants and if it’s not in the plants, it won’t get into you!

So, what did the Agriculture Department recommended to farmers in order to solve the problem of soil depleted of available minerals. They suggested adding nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. These three nutrients will make the plants grow big and green.  But, if you have done your math lately, you will realize that three minerals are 57 minerals short of the 60 essential minerals that we need.  I believe that had we followed God’s advice of allowing the land to rest every seven years, we would still have mineral rich land. Just a thought! And for you Bible history buffs. The people who followed these instructions lived long healthy lives.  The Caleb. mentioned in the bible, was 85 and still strong enough to fight in hand to hand combat, with heavy swords.

“and now behold, I (Caleb) am eighty-five years old today.  “I am still as strong today as I was in the day Moses sent me; as my strength was then, so my strength is now, for war and for going out and coming in. Joshua 14:10b-11

What a stud, at 85 he was still as strong and healthy as he was when he was 40. He was also ready to prove it by physically taking on 20 to 40-year old’s who were in their prime.

Another interesting fact is that pre-flood mankind, according to the Bible, lived a lot longer than post flood mankind.  Some excavations of preserved pre-flood vegetation have produced amazing findings. Unlike our present vegetation, this pre-flood vegetation had all 60 essential minerals.5 This would suggest that the crust of pre-flood earth had an even mixture of minerals whereas post flood mineral deposits are not nearly so uniform. If pre-flood vegetation had all 60 essential minerals and in the proper ratios. Wow, you don’t suppose that might be one of the reasons that pre-flood men and women lived to be 800 plus years old.

My family lives in what is referred to as the goiter belt. It includes Oregon and Washington and extends across the top of the United States to the Great Lake region. This area has virtually no iodine in the soil. Doctors made the correlation between low iodine and goiters, so in response, our salt is almost all iodine enriched, (iodized salt).  Before Iodine was added to salt, people living here were plagued with goiters. Unfortunately, Goiters are not the only problem with low iodine consumption. My wife does not get goiters but she often has a hard time maintaining a comfortable body temperature. She will be too cold or too hot. Taking Iodine supplements gives her body back it’s natural ability to adjust to temperature changes. Are you often too hot or too cold? You might need more Iodine.

The main point I am making is that we need all 60 essential minerals to live comfortably and healthfully past 100 years of age.  If the soil has been depleted of minerals by overuse or the soil simply never had all 60 essential minerals, then you will either suffer or you will have to supplement your diet with minerals.

Salt (sodium) reduction has lately become a culinary cause, according to the New York Times. Subway, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Burger King and Taco Bell as well as Campbell Soup and PepsiCo have all publicly vowed to produce lower-sodium products (to a degree last year, Campbell decided to add sodium back into some of its soups after sales began to slide). Critics say that too little of the essential nutrient could be dangerous.

Is salt (sodium) an evil chemical to be avoided like the plague or is it an essential nutrient that we need to consume in order to survive? With experts on both sides of the issue, who are you to believe?

In the Bible we are told that Moses, Aaron and Levi were all priests before God. Moses lived to be 120, Aaron lived to be 123 and Levi lived to be 137.  According to Deuteronomy 34:7, “Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his eyes were not weak nor his strength gone.” What did all three of these men have in common? They were all priests, consequently, they all ate lots of salt. God had commanded that all the meat and grain they consumed be thoroughly salted.

God required the people to bring offerings to the temple as a sacrifice for their sins. God’s primary purpose for the offerings was to emphasize the seriousness of sin and prepare us for Christ’s ultimate, better and final offering for sin. Though this was God’s primary purpose, he had a secondary purpose for the offerings.  He used them to meet the dietary needs of the priests which were of the tribe of Levi. When the people brought grains, bulls and lambs to the priests to sacrifice, the priests got to keep some of the sacrifice as their pay. It was where their food came from. All the sacrifices were to be sprinkled with salt. Consequently, everything that the priests and their families ate was salted. Often in the Bible, salt is used as a metaphor for something that is intrinsically good.

In Mark 9:50 Jesus made this statement…               Salt is good.”

God did not give the Levites land like he gave to the other tribes; instead he gave them a portion of the offerings. God entrusted them with temple duties, which made it difficult for them to provide food for their families the way the rest of the tribes did.

Numbers 18:18-19Their meat is to be yours, just as the breast of the wave offering and the right thigh are yours. Whatever is set aside from the holy offerings the Israelites present to the Lord I give to you and your sons and daughters as your regular share. It is an everlasting covenant of salt before the Lord for both you and your offspring.”

Evidently, God saw no problem with his chosen people eating salt. In fact, he made sure that they had an abundance of it.

More and more we are being told to restrict salt intake in our diets. This mantra is so widespread that restaurants are removing salt from their food and removing salt from the tables. Just last week Shary and I had dinner at the Pelican restaurant in Cannon Beach Oregon, it is one of the finest eateries in the area. We met with our daughter Erin and her husband Jake, our son Matthew brought his new girlfriend, Jessie, to meet us, it was a great time with great food, but there was no salt to be found on any table. We had to request a salt shaker, that was hidden away to protect us from the nasty element.

Thirestaurant, like so many others, has given in to the idea that sodium is bad for your health. So they feel they are doing their clients a service to restrict salt. Salt has been more or less placed in the category of junk food.  Health care providers are telling people to reduce or eliminate salt from their diets. This is a crime, and I’ll tell you why. Every summer people suffer from heat exhaustion and die from heat stroke. Virtually all of them are on low sodium (salt) diets. Heat stroke from exercise is one of the 3 leading causes of sudden death in sports activities.  There is a 100% survival rate for heat exhaustion when rapid, proper treatment is given to someone suffering from this affliction.1 According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine heat exhaustion can be treated by drinking a mixture of 1 teaspoon of salt to a quart of water.2 If you end up in the hospital with heat exhaustion or heat stroke, they will give you a saltwater IV.

There were only 5 player deaths in America 1931-1959 from heat. There were 103 player deaths in America 1960-2000.1 Why has the rate of heat related deaths gone up so drastically? Because we are restricting salt intake.

Twenty-seven year old, Korey Stringer, Offensive tackle for the Minnisota Vikings collapses and dies of heat stroke during practice. Korey had a wife and three year old son. Experts say that his death  was completely preventable by drinking more water and getting an adequate amount of salt.

The primary reason given for restricting salt intake is that it causes hypertension and high blood pressure. Since 1996 we have known better! In the May 22nd 1996 edition of the New York Times, there was an article abstracted from the Journal of American Medical Association. This is the journal that virtually every medical doctor in America subscribes to. The article was written by Dr. Alexander Gordon Logan, an epidemiologist and cardiologist at the University Medical School of Toronto Canada.  Dr. Logan examined 56 existing studies on hypertension and high blood pressure as it relates to heart disease and the restriction of salt. These studies included 3,505 patients. In what was probably the most extensive and conclusive research ever done on salt and its effect on heart disease, Dr Logan concluded that restricting salt would not keep you from getting hypertension or high blood pressure. He also concluded that restricting salt from people who have hypertension or high blood pressure would not improve their condition. Dr. Logan said…

“You might as well salt your food to taste. It is a meaningless exercise (a low sodium diet). Don’t get paranoid about salt. It has nothing to do with blood pressure problems. There has never been a single iota of proof that restriction of salt has any benefit.9

In a more recent study, published in the August 2011 issue of the American Journal of Hypertension, 6,250 Patients were sampled. They concluded that there was no strong evidence that cutting salt intake reduces the risk of heart attacks, strokes or death. Actually they did find that the risk of heart disease was 56% higher for people who restricted salt intake as compared to the people with the highest salt consumption.3 The less salt you consume the more likely you are to die from heart disease.

Salt is an essential nutrient. Asking people to eliminate salt from their diets is dangerous.  Dr. Tom Brewer demonstrates this fact in an article he wrote entitled “No Risk Pregnancy Diet”. Here are sickening facts.

Toxemia (a buildup of poisons in the blood stream) is almost three times as high in women who restrict salt. Infant deaths are almost double. When people get heat stroke, what do doctors give them? Saline solution (salt water). Why? Because they have a salt deficiency. Jesus said that salt was good. God told the Israelites to salt all their sacrifices and then eat them.

Yes, if you eat lots of salty chips or other salty foods, you may retain water, but this can be avoided by avoiding foods that taste too salty. The danger caused by too little salt (heat exhaustion, stroke, death) is obviously of more concern than the discomfort of retained water. Also retained water can often be treated with a higher protein diet.

One way we can avoid problems of overeating certain foods is to tune into our God-given regulating mechanism. Your body comes with a mechanism that helps you regulate how much and what types of food you eat. That mechanism is in your taste buds. If you salt food to taste and avoid foods with embedded salt (Salt that is cooked in as opposed to salting after cooking), you can avoid some of the effects of eating too much salt. Your taste buds will send a message to your brain telling you to stop. So when you get the message, stop eating.

A study was conducted at an orphanage where children were given only good food choices at each meal. The children were not told what to eat or how much to eat, however, it was recorded what these kids ate and how much they ate. Some ate nothing but fruit for a period of time, while others ate only meat, etc.… but over the long haul the researchers found that the children balanced their own diets.4  Now it must be repeated that they were only given good choices. God has designed our brains in such a marvelous way that our brains have the ability to determine a nutritional need and then send messages to the taste buds, “this would taste good, eat more of this, stop eating that.” We have observed that our kids will crave citrus (oranges, tangerines, etc.), during flu and cold season. These foods contain a lot of digestible vitamin C. Vitamin C is essential to a strong immune system. So God made our taste buds crave vitamin C when we need it, what an amazing God.

The system God created would work perfectly if we only had good food to choose from. The problem we have is that refined foods (the king’s dainties, Psalm 23:1-2), such as sugar, white flour or monosodium glutamate, these  will unnaturally create cravings that cause unbalanced diets. The addition of monosodium glutamate to chips was the reason for the slogan “Bet you can’t eat just one.” Now, monosodium glutamate, a flavor enhancer, is in all kinds of food. It overrides your God given mechanism and causes you to eat an unbalanced diet.

Read your labels, there is a reason you can’t stop eating. The best salt to use is unrefined sea salt or salt mined from ancient sea beds like Himalayan salt.

In conclusion, stop restricting salt, if your doctor has told you to restrict salt he is not only going against God’s word but he is also going against the latest science. Salt is a nutrient you cannot live without. The latest science tells us that restricting salt will shorten your life. Listen to Jesus, “salt is good”, and enjoy your salted food again. It not only tastes better but it is the smart thing to do!

Here are two concepts that will lengthen and improve your life.

Concept #1      The word of God is not in contradiction to the world of God.

Concept #2      All scripture is God breathed and useful.

[Ice Cream] One of your favorite foods is killing you!

Ice cream, almost everyone’s favorite. OK! So last week I said I would talk to you about eating ice cream. Some of you may ask, “I thought you were into healthy eating? Why would you eat ice cream?” Well my grand-kids make me do it. Yes, that’s right, it’s not my fault. It is my grand-kids. They are constantly pleading with me, “buy us ice cream”. I have no choice; what am I to do? So occasionally I stop at Dairy Queen and eat ice cream with the kiddos. I also eat it at birthday parties, and you might guess with 13 kids and 40 grand-kids there are quite a few birthday parties. I always end up feeling crummy after eating ice cream. I actually get a craving for milk, after eating ice cream, like it might be the antidote to the poison I just consumed.

Some people may ask just the opposite question, what’s not healthy about ice cream? So here are some things I have found that may be causing you and me to feel sick or crummy after eating ice cream.  To start with it is loaded with cancer producing, disease producing, sugar. Or it has some alternate form of sugar like high fructose corn syrup, which will also shut down your immune system for 24 hours. In Proverbs 23:1-2 God says to put a knife to your throat if you plan to eat that food. (We will cover that verse in depth in a future blog). Ice cream often has many life shortening chemicals in it. Some ice cream, like Breyers, is made with “modified milk ingredients” most ice-cream contains “cellulose”(wood fiber), this ice-cream will not melt. If you leave it out for ten days, it will not be melted and unlike home-made ice cream it will be covered with mold.

According to an article in Natural News, dated August 13, 2008, “store bought ice cream is dangerous to your health. Many commercial ice creams today are simply chemical concoctions presented in appealing packaging designed to sell a product that is not fit for human consumption. Everything from hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, and dry milk solids are used to produce something still allowed to be called ice cream. Many ice creams are also filled with air to double the volume. Not a dangerous practice, just less fulfilling. Some pretty frightening sounding chemicals like caroxymethyl cellulose, butyraldehyde, and amyl acetate are additives in some commercial ice creams. How about some diethyl glycol — a cheap chemical used to take the place of eggs, which is also used in anti-freeze and paint removers.”1

So, if you are like me and still want to eat ice cream occasionally and not die or destroy your immune system, then here is a recipe that will make you healthier instead of sicker. It contains nothing but good food, full of protein, calcium, salt and health producing God-made honey. (see previous blog on honey, and future blog on salt)

Some of the grand-kids camped out at our house this summer and one day they begged me for ice cream. I asked them if they had ever made ice cream and they said no. So we pulled out the hand-crank ice cream maker (I have an electric one, but thought they needed the exercise, hee hee). My daughter Leah, pulled up a recipe off the internet and I switched out the sugar for honey, one for one. I also added a little extra salt; because I love salt. When I was a kid making ice cream, a little of the rock salt would always fall into the ice cream and that was my favorite part.  Some people don’t like extra salt in their ice cream, so make it the way you like it. The bible says salt is good, scientist say that it is an essential nutrient, you can’t live without salt. Dr Joel Wallach says, “salt to taste and you will live longer”. If you want your ice cream more or less sweet, simply add or reduce the amount of honey. Experiment, till you get the flavor you like. I love to throw in berries near the end. If you put them in sooner, they will ad color to the ice-cream but be pretty unrecognizable in the end product. If you add them later, they will be more intact. This recipe has the normal amount of salt and will make about a gallon of health producing ice cream. Seriously you could eat this three times a day and just get stronger.

God wants us to enjoy the food he created. Some people believe that if you eat healthy you will lose all the enjoyment in eating. This is illustrated in the following story about an older married couple that were health food fanatics. They had taken such good care of their bodies that they were now in their eighties and were still going strong. Unfortunately, they were the victims of a car accident and both went to heaven at the same time. When they got to heaven St. Peter took them to their new mansion. It was beyond anything they had ever seen and the couple was overjoyed but the husband took Peter aside and explained that though they loved the house, they probably couldn’t afford it. Peter laughed and told the man that he was in heaven and the house was free. Next he showed the man that in his back yard was the most beautiful eighteen-hole golf course ever seen. This golf course changed to a new fantastic course every day. The man thanked Peter profusely but again expressed a concern for how expensive the greens fees might be. Peter laughed and told him that there was no charge for the use of the golf course. Next Peter took them to a banquet table spread with the most beautiful and delicious food imaginable. Once more the man said that though the food looked very good, he and his wife couldn’t eat it because it wasn’t health food, it had way too many calories. Finally, Peter, a little exasperated, said “listen; this is heaven, everything is free, nothing is harmful; you can eat all you want and never get fat or unhealthy.” On hearing this the man froze in deep thought, then turning to his wife he blurted out, “If it wasn’t for you and your lousy bran muffins we could have been here a long time ago.” These people were living the lie that health food has to be flavorless and bland.

Today salt is considered an unhealthy choice. The last few times I went to a restaurants there was no salt on the tables. It seem that it is politically incorrect to eat salt (Sodium). I will cover this in detail in the next blog but let me just drop this one bomb first. Thousands of people die each year for a lack of salt. When they are taken to the hospital the first thing the hospital does is give them a saline IV, which is a saltwater IV. Often this is the only way to save their lives. Restricting salt could kill you and restricting salt will make your food taste bland. Salt enhances almost all flavors. So salt till it tastes too salty, then cut back a little. This will give you the optimum flavor and optimum health.

So here is the God approved recipe for ice cream. The ingredients are very close to the ingredients in a protein drink.

* 6 large eggs

* 1 1/2 cups Honey

* 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

* 5 1/2 cups heavy cream, preferably raw, not ultra-pasteurized

* 5 cups whole milk

* ½ tablespoon salt

Mix then heat on mild heat to, 165 Deg. Fahrenheit, cool or refrigerate till ready to use.

Put this in your ice-cream maker and crank away. It will also produce strong arm muscles. You can store any leftover ice cream in the freezer and it will remain healthy for a long long time, that is, if you don’t eat it all right away.

Just substitute my healthy recipe for their sickness producing recipe and follow all the other directions. Make up the gallon batch and keep it in the refrigerator, then pour out a cup or two into your zip lock bag each time you want to make a bowl of ice-cream, and follow the instructions in this youtube video.

God says that milk is good, honey is good, salt is good, eggs are good. People who eat these things live longer happier lives. I am sixty-four and just a few weeks ago I played in a scrimmage soccer game against two of my grand-kids classic team. I felt great, no pulled muscles, no aches and pains. Since we began this quest to follow God’s advice on health and wellness I have not missed a day’s work due to illness. We started this quest over forty years ago. God said he would remove all sickness from us, (Exodus 23:20-26) and he has. I have been living a sickness free life for over forty years and you can start living that sickness free life too. Somebody is going to live sickness free, might as well be you! Somebody is going to live to be 100+, might as well be you! Some old fart is going to score a goal on a cocky teenager, might as well be you!

No No No!!! There is no super food!

Almost every year someone claims to have found the super food; Texas super food, spinach, seaweed, green tea, acai berry, aloe vera, and now cockroach milk. There is always someone trying to sell us one food that will fix all our problems. Don’t buy it, there is no super pill, magic bullet or super food. Every claim has always been found to be false. Good old cow’s milk or goat’s milk is the closest thing to super food you will ever find.

This is Wellness Gospel 101; our bodies are primarily made up of water, protein and essential minerals. There is no super food that provides all of these things. The most prevalent mineral in our bodies is calcium. Our skeletal bone structure and teeth are almost 100% calcium. Calcium is also found in muscles, nerves, ligaments and blood. Calcium is essential for almost every function of the body. For optimum health we need to eat and drink foods that contain high quality calcium, it is just that simple. If you don’t give your body the raw materials, it can’t build or sustain itself. Milk is one of those foods that contains high quality calcium.

With so many experts telling us what is good food and what isn’t, and with all those experts disagreeing with one another, where can we turn to get the truth? The answer is not found in some super food, it is found in God’s word, the super book. It is not a history book, but it is historically accurate. It is not a geography book, but everything in it is geographically accurate. And it is not a nutrition book, but if you follow its advice you will find that advice to be your most accurate information concerning food; what is good food and what is not. The closer you live your life to God’s word, the healthier you will become. And one of the Bible’s favorite foods is milk. Cow’s milk and goat’s milk are the closest things to super food you will ever find. And they are readily available, unlike cockroach milk. By the way, cockroaches carry disease, so you may not want to drink the milk, just sayin.

According to US National Library of Medicine,1 “Calcium is one of the most important minerals for the human body. It helps form and maintain healthy teeth and bones. A proper level of calcium in the body over a lifetime can help prevent osteoporosis.  Calcium helps your body with:

  • Building strong bones and teeth
  • Clotting blood
  • Sending and receiving nerve signals
  • Squeezing and relaxing muscles
  • Releasing hormones and other chemicals
  • Keeping a normal heartbeat”

Milk contains high quality calcium and is almost the perfect food. All mammals survive for a portion of their lives on milk alone. Human babies can live on milk alone for at least 13 months. Dr. Wallach tells of a Middle Eastern man who drank one gallon of goats milk each day and lived to be well over 100. If you were stuck on a deserted island and could only pick one thing to eat or drink, milk would keep you alive the longest. Milk is an excellent source of calcium.

Arthritis and osteoporosis are at epidemic proportions. Both are caused by a lack of calcium. And the epidemic in the USA is getting worse every year.4 Osteoporosis used to be a disease that only old women who had given birth to a lot of children contracted. Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones where they become porous or less dense than normal. It causes people to be more susceptible to broken bones and arthritis. As Americans reduced their milk intake, it began to afflict middle-aged women, then teenage girls and now men and boys are getting it. Why? Because we are drinking more and more soda pop and juice and we are drinking less and less milk. This is a double whammy to your health. Not only does soda pop lack calcium, but it also contains an unnaturally high amount of phosphorus. Phosphorus combines with calcium in a natural way in the body but when the natural balance is upset the extra phosphorus in your body will go looking for calcium to bind with, and actually cause the calcium stored in your bones to be leached out. This results in porous and brittle bones, bad teeth, bone spurs, which are calcium bumps (deposits).  neck and back problems. Gall stones, kidney stones, hypertension and cramps are also caused by a lack of calcium.

In Genesis 49:12 Jacob prophesied that one of his sons would have teeth white from milk. Milk actually contains a large amount of calcium, which is what teeth and bones are made of.  Calcium is the necessary nutrient for healthy white teeth.  4000, years ago, Jacob, inspired by God, said that drinking whole milk would bless his grown children with strong white teeth.

Other symptoms of a calcium deficiency are joint problems, insomnia, poorly functioning immune system and irritability, to name a few. According to Dr. Wallach, 85% of hypertension is due to a calcium deficiency. 5

How did these kids grow up without broken bones?

As I have mentioned before, most of my children never saw a doctor while living at home and eating what we provided. And we provided lots of milk.  At one point it did get a little out of hand because the kids loved milk. Shary had to limit the milk consumption because the kids were drinking us out of house and home. Soooo Shary told the kids they could only have two gallons per meal which equaled 6 gallons of milk per day. During that time none of our children had cavities because they had plenty of calcium from milk to strengthen their teeth. They fell out of trees and off of bikes and didn’t break bones because their bones were dense with calcium from the milk they drank. In our two hundred and thirty-two parenting years, we only had two “broken bones” Our daughter Leah fell of a galloping horse and Melody was injured playing soccer. One of the girls had a mild fracture and the other one broke her collar bone. The doctors said they did not need to be set or put them in a cast, both of them simply wore a sling for a while. Just so don’t think the rest my kids were sissies and lived a very safe and protected life. I threw in a couple of pictures of them doing normal, Schauermann kid things. Sorry, I don’t have any pictures of when they were water skiing behind a car in our drainage ditches. That, like most of the things they did was not approved by mom or dad, but it does illustrate that milk will make a body more resilient.

So… what does the word of God say about Milk?

 Exodus 3:7-8 says that God was going to bless his people by taking them to a land flowing with milk and honey. That statement is made over and over in the scriptures until it has come to be synonymous with God’s blessing. You would think that would be enough to convince most believers that God’s intention was clear that milk was for them to enjoy, but not so.  Here are three of the most common reasons Christians give for not drinking milk.

  1. A common argument Christians give to discourage the drinking of milk is… “The Bible is only referring to animals drinking their own mother’s milk,” The Apostle Paul, lays that misconception to rest in…

I Corinthians 9:7  “who tends the flock and does not drink of the milk?”

  1. I’ve also had people tell me that the milk the Bible is talking about was only goat’s milk not cow’s milk. Again, the Bible makes it plain that cow’s milk is also in God’s plan for your diet.

Deuteronomy 32:13-14 says “He (God) nourished him with…curds and milk

from herd  and  flock.”

  1. The next objection is, “Milk is only for babies and not for adults.”

Proverbs 27:27 says, “You will have plenty of goat’s milk to feed

you and your family and to nourish your servant girls.” 

So according to the Bible, goat’s milk and cow’s milk will nourish you, your family and even your hired help.

One caveat or exception for all of this is if you happen to be lactose intolerant or have some kind of food allergy. Often times if you eliminate foods the Bible says not to eat, eliminate stress, or you put some other essential nutrient back into your diet, the allergy or intolerance will go away. Under normal circumstances, milk is undoubtedly the best drink on the planet.

Our daughter Leah, the one pictured above, developed lactose intolerance while going to college. She had an athletic scholarship at Oregon State University. Her sport was crew, which required many, many hours of practice and many hours away from school to compete. Getting good grades and competing at that level created a lot of stress. As soon as she graduated her lactose intolerance disappeared.

Some have suggested that pasteurized homogenized cow’s milk is bad for you, because it has been altered. If you can get all natural non-pasteurized non-homogenized organic milk, then I would recommend it. But if pasteurized, homogenized cow’s milk is your only economical choice, it is far better than pop, coffee, tea or juices. Compared to anything else you can drink; milk is superior; it’s what your body needs.

Whole milk is better than skim or 2%. The reason whole milk is better for you is because the fat God put in milk helps you absorb the calcium. When we drink skim milk, we are reducing the amount of calcium our bodies can absorb.

Absorption of nutrients is what really matters. There is a major problem in the labeling of our food. Animal husbandry is way ahead of us on this issue. Why do I say this? Because the amount of minerals or vitamins listed on a label for human consumption is very misleading. You may read the “Nutrition Facts” on a cereal box that state a serving of this cereal contains 45% of your daily need for calcium. But what they don’t tell you is that since the calcium is not a natural source, it is not completely digestible. So it doesn’t matter one whit how much is there it only matters how much is digestible, everything else will go out of your body as waste products.  In animal nutrition this has been known and published for a long time. A great example of this is that raisins have a very small amount of iron in them. So they are usually ignored as an important source of iron. But, because the iron in raisins is almost 100% digestible, they are an excellent source of iron. Raisins are a far better source of iron than most cereals. Raisins can eliminate anemia in many people. Sometimes the unnatural sources of iron actually make people more anemic because they are almost completely indigestible and cause digestive bleeding. For years’ manufactures kept adding more and more iron to baby formula, but babies got more anemic the more iron they added. God made our food right in the first place, contrary to what many people believe, we have not made improvements on what he created. The same thing is true for calcium and calcium supplements.

Goat’s milk is actually more digestible than cow’s milk, so if you can afford it and it is available in your community, I would recommend goat’s milk. But… what my family drinks is good old homogenized, pasteurized, 4% whole cow’s milk. Why? Because it is readily available and fairly inexpensive, which was important when our family could consume more than two gallons at each meal.

People are often afraid to drink whole milk because they believe that it will make them fat. Study after study has shown that just the opposite is true. A study, published in the European Journal of Nutrition, is a meta-analysis of 16 observational studies. There has been a hypothesis that high-fat dairy foods contribute to obesity and heart disease risk, but the reviewers concluded that the evidence does not support this hypothesis. In fact, the reviewers found that in most of the studies, high-fat dairy was associated with a lower risk of obesity.3 People who drink whole milk do not have as much trouble with their weight as people who drink skim milk or 2%. Our family has always used whole milk and our kids, if anything, have always been a little on the thin side.

There are also people who have been told not to drink milk because it has chemicals and hormones in it. First if you are substituting soda for milk because you believe farmers have put chemicals in your milk, you haven’t solved the chemical problem. Look at the ingredients in soda, it actually says it has chemicals in it. Second, I went to dairy college and worked on dairies and we did not put any chemicals or hormones in the milk or cows. It is illegal to do so and the creameries test for it and will reject all your milk if they find any hormones or drugs in any of your milk samples. Our family has been consuming large quantities of milk for over forty years with no obvious ill effects. There are far more dangerous side effects to your health when substituting other drinks for milk. God made you and he made milk for you.

If you are drinking milk and still experiencing calcium deficiencies symptoms (Arthritis, joint problems, insomnia, poorly functioning immune system and irritability), you might try taking ground up cartilage (Knox gelatin), it helps in the absorption of calcium. Calcium is actually laid down in the bones on a cartilage matrix. In a healthy body, this cartilage matrix, makes up between 25-40% of your bone mass. If you don’t have enough of this matrix, your body will be unable to use the calcium you consume. 5 One small package of Knox gelatin in orange juice each day will help your calcium absorption and as an added benefit, it restores worn joints.

Your bones are the body’s storehouse for calcium. In a healthy body, when you have a high need for calcium, your body will go to the storehouse and get what it needs so you can sleep, eliminate cramps and fight cavities and hypertension. When the storehouse is empty, the only thing left to do is suffer or take drugs. God has a better way! Got milk? Milk does a body good! Because Diana Anderson eats butter instead of margarine! That one change in lifestyle saved herself and her family from a 75% increase in heart attacks, higher rates for cancer and Alzheimer’s. Ok there are other reasons Diana is happy, she loves her family and she loves God, but so do a lot of other Christians and those Christians have been taught that God really has nothing to say about what we eat. Unfortunately many Christians are getting sick and dying just like everyone around them, but that is not God’s plan. In Exodus 23:20-26 God reveals his plan.  The gist of that passage is this; “If you listen carefully to all that I (God) say and do it, I will remove all sickness from you and give you a full life span.”

God has placed his approval on butter and science is backing him up. The Harvard Medical School did a twenty-year study, which was published in January 1993. The study was entitled “The Harvard Nurse’s Health Study.”3 It was conducted with 90,000 nurses, half used butter and half used margarine. After 20 years it was discovered that the nurses using margarine had 75% more heart disease and heart attacks than the nurses who used butter. The nurses using margarine also had a higher rate of cancer and Alzheimer’s.

 Sarah and Abraham of bible fame, ate butter, red meat and drank milk. Sarah lived to be 127 and was so beautiful, that at 65, “the Egyptians saw the woman, that she was very beautiful. 15 The princes of Pharaoh also saw her and commended her to Pharaoh.” (Gen 12:14-15) Sarah was so vivacious that she carried and gave birth to a healthy child at 90 years old. After giving birth the King of Gerar found her so attractive that he wanted her to be his wife. Abraham was so healthy that he lived to be 175. Evidently, the butter they ate didn’t hurt them. Maybe, just maybe, it was good for he and his wife.

We were sold a bill of goods when we were told by renown doctors and scientists that we needed to stop eating butter and eat margarine instead. There is an old country song by Willie Nelson were the doctor tells Willie to stop drinking and Willie responds, “There are more old drunks than there are old doctors so I guess we better have another round.”

 The average couch potato lives to be 79 years old1, the average doctor only lives to be 72. If your doctor tells you not to eat butter just tell him “There are more old butter eaters than there are old doctors, so I guess we better stick to butter.”

 Our society has made “Science King” but the king has no clothes.

 1 Corinthians 3:19 states… “The wisdom of this world is foolishness to God.”

Most of our institutions of higher learning have completely rejected the wisdom found in God’s word and our society is paying a high price for that mistake. Colossians 3:2 states that “In him (Christ) are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge”. The more we listen to Jesus and his word, the more wisdom and knowledge we will possess.

 Isaiah 7:14-15 “Therefore, the Lord Himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive, have a son, and name him Emmanuel. By the time he learns to reject what is bad and choose what is good, he will be eating butter and honey.”

Wow, when Jesus was old enough to choose what is good and what is not, he chose to eat butter and honey. It is also interesting to note that in Genesis 18:8 we are told that Abraham offered angels a meal of butter, milk and red meat…   and they ate it with no complaints! In Deuteronomy 32:9 it says that God alone led Jacob and fed him with fruit, nourished him with honey, oil, butter, milk, red meat, wheat and grape juice.

In an article by Dr. Dwight Lundell. “Heart Surgeon Speaks Out On What Really Causes Heart Disease.” The upshot of it is that everything that we think we’re doing to promote cardiovascular health, like not eating butter, is actually contributing to cardiovascular disease. “Despite the fact that 25% of the population takes expensive statin medications and despite the fact we have reduced the fat content of our diets, more Americans will die this year of heart disease than ever before.” Statistics from the American Heart Association show that 75 million Americans currently suffer from heart disease, 20 million have diabetes and 57 million have pre-diabetes. These disorders are affecting younger and younger people in greater numbers every year. We are eating less and less butter and suffering more and more disease.

According to Dr. Lundell, it is not butter that is to blame for the increase in heart disease and diabetes, it is sugar and other highly processed foods. “This is a good way to visualize the inflammatory process that could be going on in your body right now. … While we savor the tantalizing taste of a sweet roll, our bodies respond alarmingly as if a foreign invader arrived declaring war. Foods loaded with sugars and simple carbohydrates, have been the mainstay of the American diet for six decades.” “This repeated injury to the blood vessel wall sets off inflammation. When you spike your blood sugar level several times a day, every day, it is exactly like taking sandpaper to the inside of your delicate blood vessels. While you may not be able to see it, rest assured it is there, I saw it in over 5,000 surgical patients spanning 25 years who all shared one common denominator — inflammation in their arteries.” Using butter substitutes like corn oil and soybean oil make the problem worse. One tablespoon of corn oil contains 7,280 mg of omega-6;” remember, that’s bad, “soybean contains 6,940 mg. Instead, use olive oil or butter.”

A review from Cambridge University, published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine in March,17 is the latest analysis to confirm the absolute lack of evidence that consuming saturated fat (In butter, eggs or milk) leads to heart disease. The June 23, 2014 Time Magazine cover story,18 publicized the fact that refined carbs, sugar, and processed foods are the real enemy—not the saturated fats found in foods such as butter, eggs or milk.

Here is another reason to eat butter instead of margarine. According to researchers at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, substituting margarine for butter can make you stupid. According to the Auckland researchers, children who ate margarine every day had much lower IQ scores by the age of three-and-a-half than those who ate butter. At an early age, butter eaters already averaged IQ’s 6 points higher.

Here are some other unique attributes of butter. According to Dr. Joel Wallach, margarine will become carcinogenic (Cancer producing) in a split second, when heated.  Butter does not react to heat in that way. We have noticed an unusual property that butter possesses, an attribute that other oils do not share.  Butter can be cleaned up with hot water only, It doesn’t need soap to get it off your butter dish. Almost all other oils are very sticky, which is probably why they stick to your arteries. God knew what he was doing when he made butter and put his biblical stamp of approval on it. So please don’t use the last of your margarine. It’s not worth it.  Just throw it away and replace it with butter. You might be able to fool Mother Nature, but you can’t fool the body God gave you.

My family and I have been using butter since 1972. I use it instead of mayonnaise, I use it to fry my eggs in the morning. I put it in my pans before cooking to keep things from sticking.  I use it on peanut butter sandwiches. I make my toast with it, cook fish in tin foil and cover the fish with butter and honey. My wife uses butter instead of Crisco or margarine for cookies and frosting. Hey I know what you are thinking, “You are a health food fanatic and you eat cookies and cake?” Yes we do; not very often but if you try to never eat sweets you are probably going to do two things you don’t want. You’re probably going to make other people not like you and you are more likely to get a bad attitude and quit the whole healthy food thing altogether. Believe it or not there is a health and wellness blog called “Eat The Damn Cake” What at hoot. Don’t be so pinched, relax and enjoy life, you will live longer.

So contrary to what we were taught by the USDA, and our doctors and teachers. substitute butter for margarine, canola oil, vegetable shortening etc. and you will be happier, healthier and enjoy your loved ones longer.

God says “eat honey because it is good”! Unlike sugar and other sweeteners, honey has many healthful benefits. King Saul’s Son Nathan was a mighty warrior, his people were enslaved by their mortal enemies the Philistines. God encouraged Nathaniel to challenge the Philistines and God then gave Nathaniel a great supernatural victory. As soon as his father Saul heard that the war had begun, he issued an order that everyone must not eat until the battle was over. Nathaniel was not present when the order was given. While in the midst of battle he became famished and out of energy. He saw some honey and ate it. Immediately he felt better. When he heard what his father had commanded he challenged the wisdom of that order, since he gained strength after eating the honey, and that strength lasted the rest of the day. Sugar and other sweeteners do not produce the same effect. They may give an initial rush of energy but quickly there after your energy level will drop below what it was before you ate the sugar. You end up worse off after eating the sugar.

Twenty-four different times in Bible history, God said he would bless the people with milk and honey. He even said that it would prolong or lengthen their lives. People who eat honey will live longer than those who use sugar or other sweeteners.

Dave Newman, director of the Astoria Rescue Mission is a close friend of mine and is an amazing physical specimen. Dave is constantly exercising and doesn’t have an ounce of body fat. He has actually competed as a MMA cage fighter, but Dave was also a sugarholic, that means he was addicted to and lived on sweets and refined foods. Without warning his health took a major turn for the worse, he was making repeated trips to the emergency room with chest pains and other heart related problems. Honey isn’t just sweet, it’s medicine!

Honey has been fond to be your best medicine for upper respiratory infections. In 2005 the American College of Chest Physicians declared that OTC (over the counter) cough remedies were largely ineffective for people of any age. In a Consumer Reports article, it was reported that honey appears to trump over-the-counter cough medicine as a treatment for coughs. In a 2007 study published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, 105 children ages 2 to 18 who suffered from upper-respiratory infections received either no treatment, honey, or a honey-flavored over-the-counter cough suppressant. Those treated with OTC cough medicine took the longest to recover and those treated with honey recovered the quickest. In January 2008 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said that over-the-counter cough medications posed unacceptable risks to children under age 2. In a 2011 article in the journal of food and chemical toxicology; it was stated that according to many studies on treatment of breast and lung cancers, honey is a good chemotherapeutic agent. It is an intelligent food. While it is selectively toxic to tumor or cancer cells, it is non-cytotoxic to normal cells.

Honey doesn’t spoil because bacteria cannot live in it. For this reason, historians tell us that in ancient times kings were buried in coffins filled with honey. Rumor has it that Genghis Khan was buried in honey. For ages people have been using honey on burns and skin lacerations to stop the possibility of infection. God in his infinite wisdom, preprogrammed bees to create honey with a vary low average ph level of 3.9, bacteria cannot live in such an acidic state. Honey also contains hydrogen peroxide, a substance known throughout the world as a strong anti bacterial. A study published in Nature magazine, makes a correlation between adequate levels of hydrogen peroxide and white blood cell function. Researchers are saying when you are sick or injured, “white blood cells converge on the site and initiate the healing process, “if” adequate levels of hydrogen peroxide are in your body.  So if you want to have a strong immune system eat honey.

There is nothing in the Bible by accident. The Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy; “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful…”  The bible makes reference to what Jesus ate and what John the Baptist ate. Listen to this: Isaiah 7:15  “He (Jesus) will be eating curds and honey when he knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right,” When Jesus was old enough to choose for himself what was good or bad, he chose to “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. That is what we would expect the bible to say but instead, it says he chose to eat honey. The bible also tells us that John the Baptist ate honey. This information seems unnecessary. Who cares what they ate? Well, evidently God cared and God still cares what we eat, because he loves us and wants the best for us. He does not want us to get tumors or cancer; he does not want us to suffer from upper respiratory infections. He wants us to live long, he wants us to choose the right things to eat and reject the wrong things to eat. If you want to sweeten something you are eating switch to honey. I used to put ketchup on my hamburgers, probably because of the sugar in the ketchup. I have switched to honey and it actually tastes better. Jesus ate “curds and honey” I tried it. I love cottage cheese and peaches in sugar syrup. Now I have cottage cheese with honey, wow it’s like eating ice-cream. Honey tastes good and it is good for you, that is probably why Winnie-the-Pooh is always in such an agreeable mood.
