Proof, God wrote the Bible!
Thousands of years before Louis Pasture discovered bacteria, God had already given Moses instructions that would protect people from diseases that are caused by bacteria and viruses. It is an amazing testimony to the fact that the Bible is the inspired word of God. There is no other conclusion that can be made. The bible is God’s love letter to us, His instruction manual to keep us from harm and it is being confirmed every day through scientific discovery.
The Black Death
The Black Death was one of the worst tragedies in human history. It could be said that it was one of the darkest reasons for the dark ages. It claimed the lives of over 60 million people. The disease was not prejudiced; it took the lives of the young as well as the aged. It killed rich and poor alike, men and women. Before it was eradicated, it prematurely wiped out approximately one third of the populations of China and Europe. It was not brought to an end by science or medicine; it was brought to an end by church leaders and the Bible.
Medical science had tried everything it knew and everything had failed!
It was at this point the Church and Bible believing pastors stepped in and suggested that the commands found in Leviticus chapter 13, 14 & 15 concerning contagious diseases should become the law of the land. People were desperate and decided to follow the Biblical instructions concerning contagious disease.
In the Law of Moses, God instructed his people not to touch dead bodies and to quarantine diseased people. It stated that even clothing could transmit disease. It was originally thought that rats were the cause of the plague, but new research disproves that theory and places the blame at human to human contact.
God also instructed his people to wash infected clothing with water, if that didn’t work, burning the thing with fire was the final solution. We understand all these things today because we can see bacteria through microscopes. In Moses’ time and during the dark ages they could not see bacteria, but God could, and instructed them appropriately.
Jewish persecution broke out in Europe during the plague because the Jewish people were not effected like the Christians. This gave some speculation that the Jews were to blame, consequently whole Jewish communities were murdered by local mobs. Had the Christians of the day listened to Jesus words before the plague, “who ever teaches and practices the law will be called great in the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:19) they not only would have been spared but would not have mistakenly blamed the Jews for their misfortune.
God’s instructions more than 2000 years before the discovery of bacteria!
“As long as he has the infection he remains unclean. He must live alone; he must live outside the camp.” Leviticus 13:46
“he shall order that the contaminated article (of clothing) be washed. Then he is to isolate it for another seven days. After the affected article has been washed, the priest is to examine it, and if the mildew has not changed its appearance, even though it has not spread, it is unclean. Burn it with fire”, Leviticus 13:54
“The person to be cleansed must wash his clothes, shave off all his hair and bathe with water; then he will be ceremonially clean. After this he may come into the camp, but he must stay outside his tent for seven days. On the seventh day he must shave off all his hair; he must shave his head, his beard, his eyebrows and the rest of this hair. He must wash his clothes and bathe himself with water, and he will be clean.” Leviticus 14:8
Bible instructions concerning contagious disease, “Superstition”?
Believe it or not, during the dark ages, these instructions found in the Bible were thought to be superstitious and out-dated. Without knowing anything about germs but simply following God’s instructions, the Black Death was not only stopped, but it was completely eradicated, it no longer exists.
In the Book, “None Of These Diseases”, S.I. McMillen tells of Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis who practiced and taught medicine at the Vienna General Hospital in 1847. The hospital was celebrated at the time, as being one of the world’s best, hosting a school of medicine. But in that great hospital and at that time, eighteen percent of the women, who delivered babies at the celebrated hospital and were attended to by doctors, died of “Labor Fever.”
Dr. Semmelweis observed that only 3% of the women who were attended to by the midwives died. He postulated that the only difference was that the doctors did autopsies and the midwives did not. Semmelweis had also observed a close friend who had cut his finger while doing an autopsy on a woman who had died of labor fever. His friend came down with the same symptoms and died.
Something was being transferred from one person to another.
Semmelweis postulated that something from the dead woman was transmitted to his friend and had caused his demise. Semmelweis then did the unthinkable. He changed the traditions of the day. He ordered everyone doing autopsies to wash with chlorinated water before seeing any other patients. The hospital was in an outrage, but Semmelweis would not be dissuaded. Consequently, the death toll dropped immediately to an all time low of 1%.
You would think that that would be the perfect end of to a wonderful story. Instead, Semmelweis got fired! The other doctors didn’t want to wash their hands all the time, so the hospital went back to its previous traditions and the death rate went back up to 18%.
Following procedures found in the Bible, got him fired over and over!
Semmelweis was hired by a hospital in Budapest and again he instituted his revolutionary procedures and, you guessed it, the death toll dropped to almost nothing. But as before, his colleges ridiculed him in person and through books. Semmelweis became so angry that he publicly denounced one famous physician of the day with these words “Your teaching… is based upon the dead bodies of new mothers slaughtered through ignorance. I denounce you before God and the world as a murderer, and the History of Labor Fever will… perpetuate your name as a medical Nero.” Again Semmelweis was fired and the old traditions returned.
He died a broken man!
Semmelweis’ discovery was never embraced during his lifetime and he died a broken man. Had the people of that day simply listened to God’s advice and loved God’s wisdom and knowledge, countless young mothers and wives would have been spared pain and death. If the husbands, fathers and mothers of those young women read God’s word and put it into practice, they would not have been at the mercy of the foolish experts of their day.
God speaks to this situation in Proverbs!
“How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge? If you had responded to my rebuke, I would have poured out my heart to you and made my thoughts known to you. But since you rejected me when I called and no one gave heed when I stretched out my hand, since you ignored all my advice and would not accept my rebuke. I in turn will laugh at your disaster: I will mock when calamity overtakes you—when calamity overtakes you like a storm when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind. When distress and trouble overwhelm you. Then they will call to me but I will not answer: they will look for me but will not find me.
Since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the Lord, since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke. They will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes. For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them: but whoever listens to me will live in safety and ease, without fear of harm.” Proverbs 1:22-33
The unfortunate thing is that Christians and their doctors are still not listening. Listening to God’s word and putting it into practice will lead to safety and easy fearless living. It will also lead to faith. Jesus said that if you do what he said you would believe, because God’s word works.
Truly; the only way to exceptional emotional and physical health and wellness, is to spend time each day with the Great Physician, Jesus Christ!
