Why thousands of honest people, lost their faith in Jesus Christ last year!

They were told to claim a promise found in God’s word the Bible and then the promise never came. They were told to claim prosperity but prosperity never came, they were told to claim healing but never got healed. Why?

A couple in our church were constantly claiming health, wealth and longevity. They would often recite from Deuteronomy Chapter 28. Here are the selected promises they would quote to all who would listen.

You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country.The fruit of your womb will be blessed.You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out. The Lord will grant you abundant prosperity. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none. 13 The Lord will make you the head, not the tail.

So how was their faith rewarded? The husband got very sick shortly after leaving our church. He had a massive heart attack and died. The wife had a nervous breakdown and their children are presently heroin addicts. Why?

God’s promises never materialized!

So why didn’t God keep his promise to this man, his wife and their family?

God actually did keep his promise! If you read all of Deuteronomy chapter 28 you will find that there were conditions that needed to be met in order to receive the promises. Here are a few…

28 If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your GodIf you pay attention to the commands of the Lord your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom.14 Do not turn aside from any of the commands I give you today, to the right or to the left 

The biggest reason people lose faith in God’s commands!

The main reason people lose faith in God’s promises is because they have not been taught that God has given instructions for what they have to do to get the promises.  It is no surprise when people get their dream car or dream house repossessed. They don’t usually stop believing in cars or houses. They were told that as long as they make the payments and abide by the agreement,  they will get to enjoy the car or home. If they fail to meet the stated conditions they will fail to enjoy the stated benefit’s. It is the same with God’s promises.

Godly Christians dying young!  Why?

My married daughter Melody called me one day to lament that yet another relatively young member of her new church family had passed away. She was frustrated because this man, like the others, was physically active, and tried to avoid all the “Bad Food” doctors had warned him about. He looked and acted healthy until suddenly he keeled over dead. She said this man had completely rejected the idea that the Bible had any helpful advice for his health.

My daughter Brook lamented to me one day how a Christian woman she had lived with, laughed at her when she tried to explain why we were to listen to God’s specific advice about food choices. Shortly after her conversation with this woman the lady ended up in the hospital, very very sick.

A friend of mine kept telling me that God doesn’t care what we eat and he certainly doesn’t want us to follow any biblical advice about food.  in just a short time he and his wife’s health deteriorated rapidly. The last time I saw them she was permanently confined to a wheel chair, most of their problems were related to diabetes and arthritis.

I have many Christian friends that laugh at the idea that they should avoid foods God said not to eat, or follow any Old Testament advice, yet they often express to me how lucky I am that my family and I are so healthy. Its not luck! We used to be sick just like them until we started to follow Gods advice. We have simply tried to meet God’s conditions for better health. Those conditions cover subjects such as, attitude, forgiveness, worship, sin and food choices.  All of those conditions and promises can be found in one place, that is what the book “God’s Guide to Biblical Health and Healing” is all about!

Why are Irene Crump and Phyllis Jones so full of life?

These radiant 100 year old twins have worked hard, which the bible recommends, they have been careful to eat wisely like the Bible suggests, and they have prospered for it.  Irene says, [1]

It frustrates and saddens me!

It frustrates and saddens me when I encounter disappointed and discouraged Christians. People, who at some time in their life, put all their hope and faith in a promise of God, only to see their hope shattered, especially in the area of physical health. Why, you ask, “How can that be? Can God make a promise and not fulfill it?” I believe the Bible when it says…

“All of God’s promises are yes and Amen.”                                                                                                                                                                      2 Corinthians 1:20

To put that into common English, “God says yes to anyone who believes His promises, and all of His promises will be fulfilled as God said they would.”

So why are there so many disillusioned Christians out there?

Because many times they have not connected the conditions of God with the promises of God. Many have been told to pray for and receive health and healing for themselves and their loved ones, but were never told what the Biblical conditions were for receiving that help. They have been told to claim a specific promise found in the Bible, without being told what God says you have to do to get it. For instance…

The Bible states…

If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you shall be saved.”

Romans 10:9

The promise:……………you shall be saved.

The condition:………confess Jesus as Lord and believe God raised him from the dead.

It doesn’t say that if we obey God’s commands and decrees, that we will be saved. We need to be careful to connect the proper promise with its corresponding condition. This is the difference between the good news of Christianity and all other religious systems. They all say you will be saved or received into heaven by how well you obeyed the rules. Nowhere in the Bible, not even in the Old Testament does it say that you will be saved from eternal separation from God or that you will go to heaven when you die, based on your ability to keep the rules.

But…

But…the Bible does state that “…if you listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees (laws). I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians for I am the Lord who heals you.” Exodus 15:26

The promise:………..I will not bring on you any of the diseases I

                                                brought on the Egyptians, I’m the Lord who heals  you

The condition:……………Listen carefully, pay attention to, and keep all

                                                God’s commands and decrees.

At this point someone usually says “Hey wait a minute, I’ve been taught that we don’t have to obey the Old Testament commands any more” and I agree; as it concerns your entrance into heaven.  But there are other consequences that are connected to God’s advice and commands.

Everyone knows!

Everyone knows that the Ten Commandments, found in the Old Testament, state that it is wrong to lie, steal, murder or commit adultery, and that there are consequences that come when we break these laws of God. For instance, if you commit adultery you could lose your marriage and it is possible that you could get a sexually transmitted disease. No one would argue, “Now I am a Christian, I’m not under the law, if I commit adultery, I won’t suffer any social or physical consequences”. Everyone knows that that is ridiculous.

Most preachers teach from time to time about the consequences of breaking these laws. But very little has ever been preached or taught about God’s laws concerning health and food choices, why not? They too have consequences, which have been mostly overlooked.

Even though we know logically that you can’t break God’s laws without consequences, some Bible student always says…”didn’t Jesus do away with the law and the old testament?” I’ll let Jesus answer that question…

Jesus said…

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; (The Old Testament) I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. (He is the only one who ever did fulfill them) I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”                            Matthew 5:17-19

I am pretty sure heaven and earth have not passed away yet, so until then we are to practice and teach God’s commands.

Over the last thirty years

Over the last thirty years, I have prayed for people in my family and our congregation. I have studied the scriptures countless hours in order to bring teachings from God’s word that would help my family and congregation avoid physical and emotional trauma. I, like any other shepherd, want the people I love and care for to be spiritually, emotionally and physically healthy and happy. One thing I have discovered is that there is no one miracle pill that will accomplish that. What I mean is that there is not any one thing that will solve all of your problems.

Sometimes people think that if they just change their diet or exercise enough that that will ensure optimal health. Why doesn’t that work? The simple truth is this; the answer to all your problems lies in ALL that God has said about our attitudes, our sin, our rest, our exercise, our food choices and drugs. The more closely we follow God’s instructions every day, the more fully we will enjoy his promises.

If you have been taught that the old testament is of no value to us or that the societal and dietary laws in the Old and New testaments hold no benefit to you as a Christian, then I suggest you read “Non of These Diseases” by Dr. S.I. McMillen. As a medical doctor with years of experience he has documented how obeying God’s word is not only spiritually beneficial but physically beneficial as well.

Super-centenarian credits God and the Bible!

116 years old and full of joy.

Super-centenarian, 116-year-old, Violet Mosses Brown has discovered the secret to living a long and happy life without many of the ills associated with old age.

Deuteronomy 33:25b  “Your strength will equal your days”

This Bible verse certainly applies to Super-centenarian, Violet Mosses Brown. Born March 4th 1900, now at 116, Violet still enjoys reading her Daily Bread devotional flawlessly without the assistance of reading glasses. She is still so sharp, she is able to effortlessly recite a poem, The Vision of Belshazzar by Lord Byron, a poem she learned while attending elementary school a century ago. She can recite it without a hitch. For fun Violet listens to music, practices shorthand and typing.  So far, her strength is equal to her days.

Violet Brown is a resident in the western Jamaica town of Duanvale, Trelawny. A local news reporter commented, “Mrs. Brown exudes peace and contentment as she sits on her cool veranda, enjoying the comings and goings of the district. Beside her is her 96-year-old son, Harold Fairweather, incredibly youthful in appearance and believed to be the oldest person with a living parent.  Harold still lives with his mother as he approaches 100. People complain that their twenty-year-old children are still living at home. Get this; Violet has a 96 year old son still living with her and a 62 year old grandson to boot.

Her son did leave home and live in England for a number of years, but felt it was his duty to come home and take care of his mother. After she is gone, he can return to England to pick up were he left off. Just think of it, many 40 year olds think they are over the hill, with this family, they would barely be starting up the hill.

Often people tell me they don’t want to live to be over 100, much less be a super-centenarian. They feel the quality of life at that age would be so poor that it would be better not live at all. At the age of 110, Violet commented with a smile, “You know, sometimes I ask myself, “Am I really 110 years old?” Because I don’t feel like 110.” Though less active at 116, Brown boasts she is still able to make her own bed in the mornings.  Her 96 year old son says she has no major illness, though her hearing isn’t what it used to be.

A local official stated, “This is a woman who we can say contributes significantly to the community. She has been humorous in her discussions, possesses good health, a memory that is outstanding, and, of course, she was the record keeper for all deaths in Duanvale.”  Violet kept cemetery records so well that the local government used her record keeping procedures as the standard for all future employees.

This super-centenarian has also been a major help to her family and church community.  Her grandson, 62-year-old Vernon Davis described his grandmother as the unifying force in their family. “She was a person who keeps the family together. She has been hard-working,” said Davis, who has lived with his grandmother since his youth. Her family says even at her age she continues to counsels the residents of Duanvale. They enjoy the company of this positive lady, who shares many gems of faith and poetry with them.

Violets influence has gone beyond the borders of Jamaca!

Her influence in her family and community has also spread to other parts of the world as evidence by this story told by her oldest son.

Harold Fairweather, appears closer to 60, than the centenarian he will be in only four years. He spoke animatedly about his experience as a migrant in Sheffield, England. He had applied for a job and was told by the manager that they did not hire blacks.  I told the gentleman, ‘When your time comes for you to go to the City Road Cemetery, I don’t think color will matter there. I have a flower garden and I do not see only white flowers there. God made them of various colors. This is God’s world, and all of us are in His beautiful garden.” The gentleman seemed surprised and asked, “Where did you get that from?” (Obviously from his mother). He hired me that day. “I became the first person of color to be employed in that business, I opened the door for other people of color; and would you believe that this gentleman became like a second father to me in England”.

So what is this Super-centenarian’s secret to a very productive, very long, very physically healthy life?

Her son says that Violet is not given to gluttony, but enjoys small meals. He also says, “She likes fish and mutton and sometimes she will have cow foot, but she does not eat pork or chicken”. Her other preferences are sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes, breadfruit, and fruit, especially oranges and mangoes. The Bible highly recommends eating mutton (red meat) and fish, it also vehemently commands us not to eat pork.[2][3][4] Violet is getting a lot of vitamin C from the fruit she eats.[5] She also says, “I don’t drink rum and dem tings.”

In my study of super-centenarians, I have not found them to simply be lucky enough to win the genetic lottery, what I have found is that they all do a lot of the same things. And all of the things in common, that they do, are backed up by the word of God and science.

Exodus 23:21, 25-26                                                                                                                                                                

“Pay attention to him (the angel of the lord) and listen to what he says. Do not rebel against him…Worship the Lord your God and his blessing will be on your food and water.  I will take away sickness from among you, and none will miscarry or be barren in your land. I will give you a full life span.”

Violet proudly testifies that her full lifespan has come from obeying God. “I live by the grace of God. At 13, Violet was received into the Baptist Church, where she was told to read Psalm 119, verse 133 — words that she has never forgotten. According to a local reporter, “She declared them to us:” “Order my steps in thy word and let no sin have any dominion over me.”

This super-centenarian declares her greatest joy is the church, “I love the Church,” Brown told reporters.

The energetic super-centenarian also said she credited her long and fruitful life to her respect for family, life, and people in general, as well as a lot of hard work when she was younger. She believes that obeying the fifth commandment, “Honor your mother and father so your days may be long” Exodus 20:12, has worked for her. I believe that it is working for me and that it will work for you and your loved ones as well. 

Somebody’s going to live long and strong past 100 years, might as well by you!

5 Biblical principals followed by Violet Mosses Brown, that contributed to her long, healthy and productive life.

  1. Biblical eating habits.
  2. Biblical worship habits.
  3. Biblical relationships with God, family and neighbors.
  4. Avoidance of sin (missing the mark, things that displease God)
  5. Steady, hard work.

The Bible does not say that your genetics determine your health. The Bible says your actions determine your healthfulness.

I will admit that, “honoring your mother and father”, was a hard one for me. When I was growing up, my dad had always been a little overbearing, OK a lot overbearing,  and even though the Bible says that honoring him would lengthen my days, I struggled with it. After being away from home and returning to work for my dad again, he and I almost went to blows one day in the back room of the golf course we were running. Our church encouraged me to keep trying to honor him, and the more I tried the easier it got.  Before he passed away, he and I had some really good talks. A plethora of studies have shown the Bible to be true in this area. One study done by  Brummett and colleagues (2001) found that, among adults with coronary artery disease, the socially isolated had a risk of subsequent cardiac death 2.4 times greater than their more socially connected peers.[6] Check out this link for a ton of evidence that points to relationships being a major factor in physical health and longevity. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3150158/

What’s My Attitude Got To Do With It?

Jeanne Calment of Paris France was inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records on October 16, 1995 as the oldest documented human ever. There are many who have claimed to live longer but none have the paperwork to prove it. At the time she was 120 years young. Jeanne remembers watching the Eiffel Tower being constructed; she outlived twenty-seven French presidents, and remembers selling pencils to the famous artist Vincent Van Gogh. At the age of 100, Jeanne was still riding her bike. Jeanne lived to be 122 years 164 days. When asked, “What’s the secret to your long life?” she answered “Laughter!”

It is not just what you eat that determines how healthy you are. It is not how much exercise you get or even how spiritual you are, that will determine how healthy and how long you will live. It is everything the bible says about health and wellness, and one of the things that the Bible mentions often, that will affect your health and mine, is our attitude.

                  “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit                                                                                    dries up the bones.                                                         (Proverbs 17:22)

The King James Version of the Bible translates Proverbs 17:22 “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine Strong’s Hebrew dictionary defines the original word as “a cure,” so a more literal translation would be that “A merry heart is a cure.”

Norman Cousins, Editor of the Saturday Evening Post, found this to be profoundly true. Cousins was dying of cancer, he was told that there was nothing that modern medicine could do for him, his story is now famous. If he was going to die anyway, he decided to stop worrying and working, and spend his last days watching funny movies. As he watched and laughed, he discovered something amazing; ten minutes of laughter produced two hours of pain free sleep. The action he took eventually cured him of terminal cancer. 1

It is now known that laughter and a positive attitude cause your immune system to function better. The opposite is true. Depression, anger, hate, etc. will cause your immune system to shut down.

My wife and I have noted that many, not all, but many people who have cancer, were bitter first. A lot of them were quietly bitter, they put on a happy face but in their hearts they were dying. Often it was because they were in a bad relationship where they felt trapped and helpless. Some were outwardly bitter and it came out almost every time we would speak with them. Their intensity would begin to rise and we would feel a little uncomfortable as they went on and on about other people’s shortcomings or problems. If this sounds like you, one solution is to speak to your soul.

                 “Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me?                            Put your hope in God. For I will yet praise him my Savior and my God.          (Psalm 42:5)

Praise the Lord, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits– who forgives all your sins and                                                            heals all your diseases.                                                          (Psalms 103:1-3)

 King David spoke to his soul, he encouraged his own soul to hope, praise and not to forget all God’s benefits. As we do that the Bible says God will heal all our diseases. Yes, our attitude affects our health.

   “Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.” (Proverbs 16:24)

                                       The tongue has the power of life and death,                                                                               and those who love it will eat its fruit.                                    (Proverbs 18:21)

God is encouraging us to constantly remind our soul to remember all the good things He has done for us, then thank and praise Him. If we put our hope in God, and decide to fill our mind and soul with those thoughts, they will bring healing to our physical bodies. Philippians 4:6-8 sums it up…

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

 If we make an effort to think on good things and we pray and trust God for the rest, God promises to take care of our hearts, minds and bodies.

Ephesians 4:26-27 instructs us don’t let the sun go down on our anger.” Evidently going to bed angry will mess up our sleep, which can lower our body’s ability to fight disease. Also, from what we learned in the wellness gospel, article about rest, a lack of sleep can also make us stupid, not to mention give us ulcers. There is overwhelming evidence that anger can cause a number of illnesses and shorten our lives. The book None Of These Diseases2 does a wonderful job on this subject.”

                           “A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown,                                                                but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones.”                                        (Proverb 12:4)

The attitude of shame and resentment will cause the bones to decay. (Osteoporosis and Arthritis) That is why two people can have the same diet, the same exercise, even the same genes, yet one gets Arthritis and the other doesn’t. Shame and resentment predispose one of them to the crippling bone disease. What is the cure? Open honest communication with the offending person. (See Matthew 18:15) Then if that fails, you will need to have some open honest communication with your Heavenly Father who can heal all wounds and mend every broken heart.

                       “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”                          (Psalm 147:3)

There is a book out called A More Excellent Way; this book catalogs many diseases and the attitude sins that seem to go hand in hand with each particular disease. If you have a lingering disease and nothing is working to heal you of it, you should get this book; it just may hold the key to your healing.

Someone has said that our attitude will determine our altitude. The most effective way I have found to adjust my attitude is to spend more time with Jesus. More time praying, more time reading his word, more time praising and worshiping him at home and church. Isaiah the prophet spoke about him…

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised and we esteemed him not. Surely he took up our infirmities (diseases) and carried our sorrows. Yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions and he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way;                               and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.”                              (Isaiah 53)

If you are struggling with unforgiveness, bitterness or any other disease-producing attitude, Jesus understands and can help. He has experienced every hurt and disappointment that you have and conquered it. The apostle Paul wrote…

We do not have a high priest (Jesus) who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” (Hebrews 4:15-16)

The Bible teaches that man is a three part being: spirit, soul and body. We have a spirit and a soul that reside in our body. Our thoughts and attitudes affect our soul and our soul can affect our bodies for either good or bad.

If you want to live to be over one hundred healthy years like Jeanne Calment of France, you will have to laugh a lot. The Bible says that the fruit of the Holy Spirit is joy (Galatians 5:22).   1.  Laugh a lot, spend time with people who make you laugh. Watch funny movies and videos, stay away from horrors and dramas.
  2. Set aside time each day to praise God. Make a list of the good things god has given you.
  3. Ask God to forgive you and then thank him that he always does.
  4. Guard your tongue, speak pleasant words, avoid negative speech.
  5. Control your thought life, reject negotive, depressing, critical thoughts and nurture uplifting, encouraging thoughts.
  6. Ask God to fill you with his Holy Spirit every day.
